The lab solves social problems with machine learning, combining the strengths of humans and machines.

AboutAbout the lab
Combining the wisdom of humans and computers
The Collective Intelligence Systems Lab (Kashima-Takeuchi Lab) aims to advance the fundamental technologies of intelligent information processing, centered on artificial intelligence, and to apply them in the real world.
The lab researches and develops statistical machine learning and data mining methods, and tackles important problems in a wide range of fields from the standpoint of data analysis.
The lab also studies the methodology of human computation, in which humans and computers combine their strengths to solve difficult problems that computers cannot solve alone.
In the graduate school, the lab accepts students in the Collective Intelligence Systems group of the Intelligence Science and Technology Course and the Applied Machine Learning group of the Data Science Course.
Key terms
- Machine learning
- Technology in which computers learn patterns and rules from data and use them for prediction and decision-making
- Data mining
- Extracting useful knowledge and patterns from large amounts of data
- Human computation
- A method in which humans and computers divide up tasks according to what each does best and work together to solve problems
ResearchResearch themes
Building on statistical machine learning, the lab works on three themes: developing new data analysis techniques, advanced applications of data analysis techniques, and human computation.
*Illustrative imageFinding new machine learning problems
Machine learning often cannot be applied as is to the diverse problems and data forms found in the real world. The lab finds and models new machine learning problem settings and develops efficient, highly accurate learning algorithms.
*Illustrative imagePutting data analysis to work for society
Together with diverse partners such as companies, national governments, and local governments, the lab finds new applications of machine learning and works on them, aiming to connect data analysis techniques with the solution of real-world problems that have impact.
*Illustrative imageSolving problems through human-machine collaboration
Many tasks, such as advanced recognition and creative design, remain difficult for computers alone. The lab is opening up the field of human computation, which solves such problems by skillfully combining humans and computers.

Ratings and reviews reflect the experiences of individual current or former students, not the lab's official views. Whether a lab has reviews, or how many, says nothing about the lab itself.
Students who take part in an interview may receive a thank-you gift worth ¥1,000, regardless of what they say.
