Land Use Lab
Machine-translated · View original
The lab uses fieldwork to study urban planning and community development.

AboutAbout the lab
Going into the field to study community development.
The Land Use Lab (Prof. Fujii's lab seminar) studies the use of urban planning systems, community development that builds on community-initiated efforts, and the use of local resources in districts such as suburban residential areas and city centers.
The lab traces its origins to the Land Use Lab that has existed since the founding of the College of Policy and Planning Sciences, and the Arita Lab and the Kawashima Lab share the same roots.
Members visit the field many times, conduct repeated interviews, and carry out surveys and analysis based on fieldwork.
Because of building construction, the lab has currently moved from the Humanities and Social Sciences Master's Building to the Project Research Building.
Key terms
- neighborhood management
- Efforts in which neighborhood associations, management associations, and external organizations work together to maintain and run the living environment in suburban residential areas
- building agreement
- Rules that residents of a residential area create with the consent of all of them. The lab is examining how to review them
- mixed land use
- The idea of allowing buildings for uses other than housing to be mixed into residential areas
ResearchResearch themes
The lab works on research where three interests intersect: the use of urban planning systems, community development that builds on community-initiated efforts, and the use of resources in specific districts and towns. Themes are set based on each interest, cases and subjects are selected, and they are investigated through fieldwork.
*Illustrative image“Places of Connection” Using Vacant Space
The lab studies “places of connection” that use vacant space to resolve and prevent social isolation. This is the current priority theme that the lab has worked on for the past several years, and cases are examined while taking part in a study group with labs at other universities.
*Illustrative imageRegenerating Residential Areas through Space Sharing
The lab examines ways to revitalize detached-house residential areas, where aging and vacant houses are increasing, by sharing vacant space. The theme aims at regenerating planned detached-house residential areas.
*Illustrative imageNeighborhood Management in Suburban Residential Areas
The lab examines the review of building agreements, making residential areas multifunctional (forming hubs, allowing mixed land use, revising land-use regulations), and how neighborhood associations, management associations, and external organizations can work together.
*Illustrative imageCommunity Development and the Super City Initiative in Tsukuba
The theme covers community development in Tsukuba City and projects related to the Super City initiative. Examples include revitalizing the city center, reusing the site of former civil servant housing, redeveloping parks, and issues with the criteria for development permits.
