Yashiro Lab (Lightweight Structural Systems Engineering)
Machine-translated · View original
The lab models composite materials from forming through to fracture.

AboutAbout the lab
Modeling the entire life of composite materials to improve their reliability
The Yashiro Lab studies advanced composite materials used in aerospace vehicles, from forming through to damage and fracture.
Lightweight structural design for aircraft that fully exploits the characteristics of lightweight, high-strength, high-stiffness advanced composites has not yet been achieved.
To address this, the lab models everything from forming through damage progression and fracture as the life of a structural material, and conducts research to improve the reliability of materials and structures.
Based on findings from experiments and analysis, the lab aims to move away from design methods that assume conventional metals, and to propose and realize design technologies that make the most of the characteristics of composite materials.
Key terms
- Advanced composite materials
- Lightweight, high-strength, high-stiffness materials. Their use in aerospace vehicles is spreading.
- Delamination
- Damage in laminated composite materials in which the layers separate from each other
- Fracture toughness
- A property indicating a material's resistance to crack growth. Between layers, it refers to resistance to the layers separating.
ResearchResearch themes
Aerospace vehicles face strict demands for weight reduction, and the use of lightweight, high-strength, high-stiffness advanced composites is spreading. The lab models the entire process of advanced composites, from forming through damage progression and fracture, and conducts research to improve the reliability of materials and structures.
*Illustrative imageEvaluation Methods for Interlaminar Fracture Toughness in Delamination
The lab develops test methods to evaluate interlaminar fracture toughness for the progression of delamination, in which the layers of a composite material separate from each other.
*Illustrative imageStrength Evaluation Based on Microstructure
The lab evaluates how damage progresses and the resulting strength, based on the microstructure of composite materials.
*Illustrative imageModeling Manufacturing Processes of Composite Materials
This research models the manufacturing processes used to make advanced composite materials and structures. The lab treats the microstructure during forming through numerical analysis.
*Illustrative imageSimulation of Damage Progression
The lab develops simulations that predict how damage progresses when static or cyclic loads are applied to composite materials.
