The Ogata Lab studies numerical analysis. Numerical analysis has a strong practical side, as it studies methods for scientific and technical computing, but it is also a field that is interesting in itself as mathematics. Under the concept of "creating numerical analysis," the lab uses mathematics and computers to solve a variety of problems and takes on the challenge of opening new frontiers in numerical analysis. The lab works on numerical computation methods that use the theory of Sato hyperfunctions and complex function theory.

The Nishiyama Lab studies the mathematics and algorithms of machine learning. It works on optimal transport, which measures the difference between probability distributions, and on computational methods for Bayesian inference based on kernel methods. Recent master's and bachelor's theses have addressed topics such as improvements to the Sinkhorn algorithm and machine learning using the Wasserstein distance.

The Utsumi Lab uses computational models and psychological experiments to study how people understand the meaning of words and metaphors. It investigates how the meanings of words and concepts are represented and processed in the mind, with a particular focus on abstract words. The lab also studies the processes by which people understand, appreciate, and produce metaphor and irony. Separately from its cognitive science research, the lab also works on language information processing, including automatic summarization and document clustering.

The Miyamoto Lab focuses on Human-Agent Interaction (HAI), which designs interaction between people and artificial systems (agents). Using both theory and empirical studies, the lab investigates how conversational agents such as chatbots, voice dialogue robots, and virtual characters should speak in order to be trusted by people and to be comfortable to interact with. This is an area where many fields intersect, including information engineering, cognitive science, social psychology, linguistics, and design. The lab is jointly run with the Utsumi Lab, and for graduation research it accepts students as the Utsumi-Miyamoto Lab.

The Kayoko Lab studies mechanisms that connect society and people using information systems such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS). GIS is a system that displays location information on a digital map, and can be used to provide and share information and to support decision-making. The lab develops systems that support areas such as tourism and disaster prevention. The lab has also been actively involved in research and support related to the recovery and reconstruction after the Great East Japan Earthquake.
