Satoru Shoji
0 student voices
The Shoji Lab has worked on microfabrication using light and on manipulating nanomaterials with light. The research page on the lab's website lists three-dimensional micro- and nanofabrication using two-photon polymerization, and the trapping, separation and extraction, and alignment control of nanomaterials based on optical radiation pressure. Its publications also include the development of composite materials of polymers with carbon nanotubes or plasmonic metal nanoparticles, and holographic lithography. Note that the papers listed on this page date up to around 2013.

Yun Zhang, Professor
0 student voices
The Zhang Lab aims to control light as both a wave and a particle, deepen the understanding of light, and pioneer new technologies. Its research fields are optical engineering and photon science, and atomic, molecular, and quantum electronics. The lab has research teams, including a quantum optics team and a multiphoton interference team. Students mainly take the lead, pursuing research based on their own interests and learning from one another through lab seminars.

Masaki Tokurakawa, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Tokurakawa Lab develops high-intensity ultrashort-pulse laser sources, centered on the 2 μm wavelength band, and studies their applications. Laser sources are an important technology supporting Japanese industry and academia, but most are now imported from overseas, and the latest sources are sometimes unavailable in Japan. The lab therefore aims to develop and use cutting-edge lasers that are not on the market. Its long-term goal is a tabletop-sized, high-brightness light source that bridges soft X-rays, the mid-infrared, and terahertz (THz) regions.

Masayuki Katsuragawa, Professor
0 student voices
The Katsuragawa-Oae Lab conducts laser experiments in East Building 6 and researches the development of short-wavelength, wavelength-tunable laser light. The lab has demonstrated that the process by which laser light is generated can be artificially manipulated and controlled, and it applies this technology to laser development. Another pillar of its work is the development of a high-power, high-intensity laser system for measuring metal atoms and ions in the mesopause, about 100 km above the ground. For students who wish to join the lab, the goal is to help them develop the ability to think things through for themselves.

Mitsuru Musha, Professor
0 student voices
The Musha Lab researches the development of lasers whose frequency and intensity stability is raised to the utmost limit, along with their applications. For ultra-high-precision measurement, including gravitational wave detectors, the lab is developing highly stable light sources and ultra-stable optical frequency references. It also works on technology for transmitting an ultra-stable frequency reference over long distances through optical fiber without degrading it, and on developing new types of light sources that use optical fiber.

Shen Shen, Professor
0 student voices
To clarify the physical foundations that raise the photoelectric conversion efficiency of quantum dot solar cells, the Shen Lab studies metal oxide substrates and semiconductor quantum dots. In a solar cell, quantum dots absorb light and generate carriers. The metal oxide electrode acts as an n-type semiconductor and smoothly transports the electrons that are generated. The lab also aims to use transient absorption spectroscopy to reveal how charges separate and recombine inside a solar cell under illumination.

Akifumi Asahara, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Asahara Lab researches the development of new measurement and spectroscopy technologies that use optical frequency combs as a light source. In collaboration with the Minoshima Lab and the Kato Lab (Department of Engineering Science), it holds experiments, lab meetings, and various events jointly as the Minoshima-Asahara-Kato group. In addition to research on dual-comb spectroscopy, the lab works on spectroscopy techniques extended into the spatial dimension, targeting metamaterials and optical vortices. The lab proposes and demonstrates new spectroscopy techniques that make full use of optical frequency combs.

Eriko Watanabe, Professor
0 student voices
The Watanabe Lab researches and develops new measurement systems and information processing systems that center on optical technology and combine image processing and information technology. The lab is developing a system that measures the phase information of biological cell samples in a non-contact, non-invasive way, with extremely high precision and speed. It is also working on the miniaturization of an ultrafast optical server for video retrieval. The lab has two research groups: the phase group and the correlation group.

Akira Shirakawa, Professor
0 student voices
The Shirakawa Lab conducts fundamental research and development of lasers. The lab pioneers new methods, new functions, and new materials for next-generation lasers, working toward higher power, shorter pulses, and higher functionality. The lab's three key research topics are fiber lasers, ceramic lasers, and phase-locked lasers. To join this lab, undergraduates enter the Optical Engineering Program in Category III, and graduate students enter the Department of Engineering Science.

Hitoki Yoneda, Professor
0 student voices
The Yoneda Lab studies hard X-ray lasers and optical elements for high-power lasers. Prof. Yoneda belongs to the Institute for Laser Science at the University of Electro-Communications. The lab has published, together with co-authors, papers dealing with hard X-ray pulses.
