The Sugawara Lab studies security problems at the interface between software and hardware. When information technology connects to real-world equipment, as in autonomous driving or automated factory operation, new threats emerge in hardware and the analog domain. The lab studies in advance what kinds of attacks are possible and what kinds of countermeasures are possible. Its research themes are attacks that deceive sensors, and side-channel attacks that exploit information leaking from devices implementing cryptography.

The Takada Lab studies security that is usable and easy to use, user authentication, web security, and related topics. Its research themes also include analysis of system logs, support for system operation, interactive systems, information visualization, and mobile systems. A recent paper addresses strengthening phishing countermeasures through real-time detection after a web page is displayed. The lab belongs to the Security Informatics Program of Class II (Interdisciplinary Fields) in the undergraduate school and to the Security Informatics Program of the Department of Informatics in the graduate school.

The Sakiyama-Li-Miyahara Lab studies security measures centered on cryptographic technology, as well as information security based on new concepts. The lab's website explains that attacks on information systems are a growing threat in the real world, and that increasingly sophisticated attackers cannot be ignored. Together with the Sugawara Lab and the Iwamoto-Watanabe Lab, the lab pursues next-generation security systems that increase the resilience of information infrastructure. For undergraduate thesis research, the lab accepts assignments in two separate groups: the Sakiyama-Miyahara Lab and the Li Lab.

The Nakamura Lab aims to realize robots that autonomously acquire a wide range of abilities as humans do, and studies mathematical models of that learning. Humans are born immature, learn concepts and behaviors while adapting to their environment, and eventually become able to communicate with others through language. The elemental technologies obtained from this research are also applied to research on intelligent systems, such as analyzing children's behavior in nursery schools. On the lab's website, the lab is introduced under the name "Nakamura-Jiang Lab."

The Koizumi Lab applies IT such as AI and robotics to medicine, and researches robots for diagnosis and treatment using ultrasound. The lab proceeds with development based on the concept of "medical skill digitization," in which medical skills are organized by function and built into robot mechanisms and programs. The lab is building systems that use high-intensity focused ultrasound to diagnose and treat affected areas without cutting the body. Lab visits are accepted at any time.

The Shintake Lab researches and develops robots made of soft materials, along with the enabling technologies behind them. The lab is distinctive in covering the whole process: starting from the materials, it fabricates components such as actuators, sensors, and pumps, and then implements them in robots. The lab also focuses on environmentally friendly green robotics based on biodegradable materials and plants, and on edible robotics based on edible materials. Students are divided into groups for soft robotics, bioinspired robotics, biodegradable and edible robotics, and plant robotics, and each pursues its own research themes.

Its work includes quadruped robots that incorporate animal musculoskeletal systems and underwater robots that move using soft materials. The lab also researches and develops advanced robot and mechatronic systems to meet the needs of society and industry. Students who wish to join the lab are required to visit it beforehand and meet with the faculty members.
