A particle physics research division that uses supercomputers to explore the force between quarks from first principles.

The Particle Physics Division is one of the research divisions of the Center for Computational Sciences, and it studies the strong force that acts on elementary particles. Studying the strong force is difficult with pencil and paper alone, so the lab uses numerical simulations of lattice QCD on supercomputers. Starting from the dynamics of quarks, the lab aims to derive the mass and interaction properties of the nucleon, a bound state of quarks. The lab also works on elucidating the phase structure of QCD, including the ultra-high-temperature state of the early universe and the high-density state inside neutron stars.
