The Earth Dynamics Lab analyzes the Earth's dynamic changes through geophysical big data analysis, field science, laboratory experiments, rheology, and the building of mathematical and analogue models. It is one of the fields in the Earth Evolution Sciences major of the College of Geoscience. Faculty members study the earthquake generation processes in subduction zones and the formation of accretionary complexes, earthquake investigations using seismic waves and satellite data, and source process analysis using seismic waveform data. Graduation research topics include investigations of what happened during great earthquakes and studies of the relationship between rocks and fluids at subducting plate boundaries.

The Petrology Lab conducts research that clarifies the formation mechanisms of rocks and tectonics through rock field surveys and elemental and isotope analysis. Professor Toshiaki Tsunogae analyzes metamorphic rocks found in orogenic belts in India and Africa. Associate Professor Kei Ikehata analyzes the behavior of volatile and chalcophile elements in magma. Graduation research includes work on rocks from Antarctica and India.

The Mineralogy Lab decodes information about the Earth and the universe recorded in minerals, based on the results of physicochemical experiments on a wide variety of natural minerals. It is one of the fields in the Earth Evolution Sciences Major of the College of Earth Sciences at the University of Tsukuba. Examples of graduation research topics include ancient West Asian pottery, fluids of granitic origin, and glass inclusions in carbonaceous chondrites.

The Earth Resource Science Lab aims to understand, in a unified way and from a planetary science perspective, the concentration and dispersion of elements in the Earth system and changes in the environment of the biosphere. It is one of the fields established in the Earth Evolution Sciences Major of the College of Earth Sciences at the University of Tsukuba. The faculty's research areas are the analysis of paleoenvironmental change using sedimentary rocks and sediments, the history of life on Earth, and tectonics. Graduation research topics include mineralization of ore deposits in Mexico, oxygen isotope ratios of quartz from the Hishikari gold deposit, volcanic rocks around Lake Atacama in Chile, the K-Pg boundary layer, and stalagmites from a cave in Italy.

The Foraging Ecology Lab (Project Assistant Professor Wan Yi Lee) studies the gut microbiota of non-human primates and its fermentation capacity. It is listed under Systematics and Evolution on the faculty list of the College of Biological Sciences.

Louis J Irving, Assistant Professor

Irving Lab studies how plants interact with their biotic and abiotic environments, using ecophysiological approaches. Various stresses, such as drought, nutrient deficiency, disease, and parasites, limit plant productivity. The research falls into three themes: plant parasitism, regulation of growth under resource-limited conditions, and seed germination and establishment.
