The Structural Engineering Lab (Division I) studies the effects of wind and earthquakes on bridges, new structures and members for bridges, and bridge diagnosis. The lab originally started with the effects of wind on very long bridges (long-span bridges) and wind-resistant structural design as its basic theme. It has since expanded its research into a wide range of structural engineering fields, including typhoon simulation, seismic resistance, joints, damage prediction, and monitoring, and it also carries out international cooperation, mainly in the field of bridge engineering. The lab has experimental facilities such as a low-speed wind tunnel and a Charpy impact testing machine.

In the fields of coastal engineering and coastal environmental engineering, the Coastal and Aquatic Environment Lab studies the management of coastal areas, including coastal conservation, promoting the use of coastal areas, and the conservation, remediation, and restoration of the coastal environment. Its research rests on two pillars: investigating the mechanisms of disasters such as tsunamis, storm surges, and high waves to devise countermeasures, and predicting and evaluating the environment of coastal areas and estuaries in order to restore it. The wave flume in the hydraulic experiment building owned by the lab is used for experiments and exercises for third-year undergraduates, and for experiments conducted as part of undergraduate, master's, and doctoral research. Every week, the lab holds a joint lab seminar attended by everyone from undergraduate thesis students to doctoral students, and presentations by international students are in English in principle.

The Geotechnical Engineering and Geoenvironment Lab clarifies the phenomena and mechanics occurring in soil and ground, and works on developing and promoting geotechnical and foundation technologies. Its research focuses mainly on ground structures such as tunnels and river embankments, and it also puts effort into countermeasures against geotechnical hazards caused by heavy rain and earthquakes. The lab also studies the long-term stability of social infrastructure, monitoring technologies, and efficient maintenance methods. In recent years, it has turned its attention to green infrastructure that makes use of natural processes, aiming for sustainable, environmentally friendly cities and societies.

The Transportation and Urban Studies Lab studies urban transportation, urban planning, and traffic engineering in order to solve the wide range of transportation problems that arise in cities. The lab aims to contribute to transportation systems that are safe and comfortable for more people. The lab's page lists the movement of people and goods, modes of transportation, roads, rail tracks, and terminals as essential to both daily life and economic activity. The faculty members study traffic control and operation, land use and transportation, public transportation, and new mobility.

The Concrete Lab focuses on concrete structures and carries out research and education that contribute to making social infrastructure in Japan and abroad more resilient, more durable, and longer-lived. Its work ranges widely, from research and technology development on materials and structures to reform of social systems, covering not only academic research but also practical research. The lab actively collaborates with companies and operators, and also aims to put its research results into practice in society. The lab's website introduces it under the name "Concrete Lab."
