The Structural Materials Design Lab studies how metallic materials such as steel and aluminum alloys can be used as structural components. Through alloy design, process development, and property evaluation, the lab aims to create new materials with better properties than conventional ones. Against the background of environmental damage and rising material prices, the lab also develops and proposes resource-saving materials in which elements are reduced or replaced. On the lab's website, it is introduced as the "Hirosawa Lab."

The Advanced Materials Engineering Lab studies advanced composite materials that use chemical reactions as a function. The advanced composite materials it studies are new materials that mimic the dynamic functions of living organisms. One example, self-healing ceramics, is attracting attention as a material for next-generation aircraft. On the lab's website, it is introduced as the "Nakao Lab."

The Materials Strength Control Lab works on metals, alloys, and ceramics, aiming to realize new, highly reliable structural materials by controlling the microstructure and crystal orientation of materials. Its starting point is the idea that bringing out the performance that materials inherently have is essential for making structural materials more reliable and longer-lasting, and for making effective use of limited resources. Based on strength of materials, crystal plasticity, and materials microstructure science, the lab works to clarify deformation mechanisms and, on that basis, to control microstructure and crystal orientation. Its research rests on two pillars: ceramic coating by particle impact at room temperature, and microstructure control through high-temperature processing and heat treatment.

The Environment-Adaptive Materials Lab studies how to make fiber materials with nano-hierarchical structures using a method called laser-heated electrospinning (LES). Because LES does not use solvents, it has a low environmental impact, and there is no concern about solvent remaining in the material, which gives it an advantage in safety for medical and hygiene applications. The lab also works on making functional materials that make use of natural resources. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Takasaki Lab."

The Functional Materials Engineering Lab focuses on developing materials for thermoelectric conversion elements, which are key to putting thermoelectric conversion technology into practical use. Its fields of specialty are applied physical properties, inorganic materials, and materials design, and its listed keywords also include thermoelectric materials and first-principles calculations. The lab is part of the Materials Engineering Program in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, and Ocean Engineering, College of Engineering Science, Yokohama National University.

The Plastic Working Lab researches and develops metal forming methods that achieve higher strength, lighter weight, higher functionality, and low environmental impact. The lab works on metal forming that uses the vibration motion of servo presses, and on developing forming methods for lightweight parts. On the lab's website, it is also introduced under the name "Maeno Lab."

The Magnetic and Spintronic Materials Lab studies the creation of high-performance materials, ranging from magnetic and spintronic materials to semiconductor-related materials, and their applications. Magnetic materials play a role in a wide range of applications, from motors and transformers to power-generation devices that harvest energy from the environment and eliminate the need for a separate power supply for IoT devices. To bring out the full potential of a material's properties, the lab makes materials in the thermal non-equilibrium regime, controlling the crystal structure, the arrangement of elements within the lattice, and the nanostructure. On the lab's website, the lab is presented under the name "Ohtake Lab."

The Physical Properties and Materials Informatics Lab (Yamazaki Lab) studies how the functions of amorphous and phase-change materials arise, focusing mainly on metallic materials. From a physics perspective, the lab investigates how hard-to-see internal states such as local structure, defects, and fluctuations lead to functions such as magnetism, mechanical behavior, and phase change. By combining materials synthesis, synchrotron radiation measurements, first-principles calculations, and AI and data science, the lab aims to move from understanding to prediction and design. The lab was newly established in February 2026, and in the 2026 academic year the incoming fourth-year undergraduates were assigned to it as its first cohort.

The Complex Fluid Dynamics Lab studies complex fluid phenomena, such as the flow of air and water, using numerical simulation and experiments. The lab extracts universal properties found in complex fluid phenomena and proposes fluid control technologies that contribute to energy savings and environmental protection. For problems such as oil spills in marine environments and tsunami damage, the lab develops integrated behavior prediction systems based on numerical simulation. The research keywords are drag reduction and multiphase flow.

The Marine Hydrodynamics Lab takes an integrated view of things floating at sea and works on research and development based on fluid dynamics. Its subjects include ships, marine renewable energy facilities, and aquaculture facilities. The lab analyzes the motion of floating bodies and the surrounding fluid through numerical simulation and water tank experiments, then evaluates and improves the technologies it develops through field experiments at sea.
