Shinichi Shirakawa, Professor
0 student voices
The Shirakawa Lab conducts broad research and development on artificial intelligence technologies, including evolutionary computation, machine learning, and image processing and recognition. The lab pursues both the development of fundamental algorithms and research that applies them to real-world problems. It also carries out joint research with researchers within the university, at other universities, and at companies. In addition to students of the Graduate School of Environment and Information Sciences, the lab accepts fourth-year students of the Computer Science Educational Program (EP) in the Faculty of Science and Engineering as graduation research students.

Takashi Tomii, Professor
0 student voices
The Tomii Lab specializes in data engineering and multimedia databases, and researches advanced applications of databases. Paper titles include visualization of the energy consumption of EVs and support for lifelog analysis using an information visualization language that extends SQL. Graduate students belong to the Department of Information Environment in the Graduate School of Environment and Information Sciences, and undergraduates belong to the Computer Science Educational Program (EP) in the Department of Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Tomohiro Fujii, Professor
0 student voices
The Fujii Lab studies the grammar of human language from the standpoint of theoretical linguistics. It investigates syntax, which deals with how words combine to form sentences, through both theory and linguistic experiments. Its research also covers the process of acquiring the grammar of a language (grammar acquisition) and semantic inference by English learners whose native language is Japanese.

Tatsunori Mori, Professor
0 student voices
The Mori Lab specializes in digital document processing, information retrieval, information extraction, and natural language processing. Automatic summarization and question answering are also listed among its research keywords. Prof. Mori contributed to writing a book summarizing the AI project "Can a Robot Get into the University of Tokyo?" Recent papers for which Prof. Mori is the corresponding author include work on information extraction using large language models and on a Japanese sentiment analysis model.

Katsunari Yoshioka, Professor
0 student voices
The Yoshioka-Sasaki Lab studies the observation, analysis, and countermeasures of cyberattacks that are actually occurring. It also works on predicting attacks expected to occur in the near future, and is interested in practical, highly applicable cybersecurity technologies. Its themes range widely, from usable security, which centers on the people who use systems, to malware countermeasures and the observation of infections in IoT devices. The lab also provides services, such as operating honeypots, which are decoy observation systems.

Ryoji Tanabe, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Tanabe Lab conducts fundamental research on evolutionary computation, a field within artificial intelligence and computational intelligence. Evolutionary computation is a general term for a class of iterative, stochastic optimization methods, including genetic algorithms and evolution strategies. Evolutionary computation is one useful approach to black-box optimization problems, where the objective function is not given as a formula. To broaden the application areas of evolutionary computation, the lab works on realizing methods that are higher-performing and easier to use.

Taichi Murayama, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
The Murayama Lab centers on web informatics and computational social science, and studies social problems using data from the web. Working with web data that reflects the information of contemporary society, the lab clarifies the causes of various problems latent in society and develops methods that contribute to solving them. Its topics include online misinformation and conspiracy theories, the analysis of social media posts, and the prediction of data that change over time. The lab was established in April 2024 as a lab affiliated with the Department of Information Environment, Graduate School of Environment and Information Sciences, and the Computer Science EP of the Department of Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Faculty of Engineering Science.

Akihiro Sakakida, Lecturer
0 student voices
In this lab, Lecturer Akihiro Sakakida conducts research aimed at clean combustion and improved thermal efficiency in hydrogen engines. Hydrogen engines suffer from abnormal combustion such as knocking under high load, and the lab is working to solve this problem. Aiming to develop a two-phase flow injector that injects hydrogen and water into the engine cylinder at the same time, the lab first built a prototype direct in-cylinder hydrogen injector and is evaluating it in an engine. In the department's faculty list, his fields of expertise are given as gasoline engines, pressure vessels, fuel cell systems, and fuel injectors.

Keiichiro Takato, Lecturer
0 student voices
In this lab, Lecturer Keiichiro Takato studied how to develop teaching materials that turn what students design in mechanical design courses into something visible. The aim was to make the whole process a PBL topic: for a problem that differs from student to student, conceiving, designing, and building based on numerical evidence, and then evaluating the performance of the finished product. Using a 3D printer, the lab turned the gear transmission assigned in mechanical design and drafting into a working model, including a synchronizer mechanism that allows gear changes. In the department's faculty list, his fields of specialty are given as design engineering, engineering education, and flow visualization.

Daisuke Ito, Lecturer
0 student voices
Lecturer Daisuke Ito's lab uses electrochemical methods to study corrosion protection related to the maintenance and management of facilities such as oil storage tanks. The lab works on methods for evaluating the degradation of protective coatings applied for corrosion protection, and on developing long-life anticorrosive coatings. Experimental education and recurrent education for engineers are also subjects of its research.
