The lab studies space around Earth, the Moon, and the planets, based on electromagnetism and plasma physics. Through observational research using rockets and space probes, together with theoretical research, the lab also looks toward the origin of the solar system and electromagnetic phenomena in even more distant space. The lab's research targets diverse electromagnetic and plasma phenomena across very wide regions of space. The lab was founded in 1945 as the first chair in Japan in charge of terrestrial electromagnetism.

The lab studies the variability and evolution of atmospheres on planets, including Earth. Planetary atmospheres are continuously escaping into space under the influence of solar ultraviolet radiation and the solar wind. The lab investigates this escape by combining satellite observations, ground-based observations, and numerical simulations. The lab participates in the science team of NASA's Mars orbiter MAVEN, in collaboration with the University of Tokyo and others.

The lab studies variability in "planetary spheres," meaning a planet itself together with its surrounding atmosphere and space. Using the large radio telescope at the Iitate Observatory in Fukushima, a telescope at the summit of Haleakalā in Hawaii, auroral cameras, and other instruments, the lab observes faint signals from the solar system. By combining these with satellites and spacecraft from Japan and around the world, some of which carry observation instruments the lab developed itself, the lab explores the variability and evolution of bodies in the solar system. The lab's website is that of the Planetary Plasma and Atmospheric Research Center (PPARC).
