The Urban Management Lab studies urban and regional planning systems related to land use in order to create sustainable urban and regional spaces. Its subjects range from the district level to the wide-area level, and from central urban districts to rural areas, covering not only Japan but also towns overseas. The lab builds planning theory for physical space, develops techniques for making plans, and designs the social mechanisms that make those plans happen. In recovery from catastrophic disasters, the lab also takes part in hands-on work supporting plan-making in affected municipalities and districts.

The Welfare Architecture Lab studies housing and public welfare architecture such as facilities for education, culture, healthcare, and welfare. In contemporary society facing crises such as inequality and population aging, the lab considers how to guarantee a minimum standard of living. Through research and practice on the interaction between people's actions and lives and architecture and regional space, the lab builds the theory that forms the foundation of planning. As the Onoda Lab, it works together with the Architectural Space Lab.

The Architectural Space Lab conducts a variety of surveys and thought experiments to uncover the fundamental relationship between people and space. Based on the findings, the lab develops and tests the building types that contemporary society needs in order to keep up with the times. It is an interdisciplinary field that aims to connect practice and theory. As the Onoda Lab, it works together with the Welfare Architecture Lab.

The International Disaster Mitigation Strategy Lab studies how to develop international strategies for urban disaster risk reduction and recovery. Taking into account the natural, economic, and social conditions of each country and region, the lab identifies issues both before and after disasters. Using building damage data, the lab develops methods for assessing urban vulnerability and applies them to real cities. The lab also investigates the recovery process in disaster-affected areas such as Taiwan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and the areas hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake.

The Living Environment Design Lab is a building environmental engineering lab that studies human responses to indoor and outdoor physical environments. It investigates how the body, mind, and behavior respond to conditions such as heat, cold, and humidity. Based on the results, the lab develops technologies for controlling the environment and methods for environmental design. The lab aims to realize building environments that are healthy, comfortable, and conducive to intellectual productivity.

The Sustainable Building Environment Lab studies the thermal, air, and light environments of building spaces, as well as their energy consumption. The lab researches building environmental technologies for realizing buildings that are healthy, comfortable, and energy-efficient. It works on developing air-conditioning technologies and daylighting technologies, and on creating methods for evaluating the environment. The lab also studies the indoor gamma-ray environment in areas affected by the nuclear power plant accident, and methods of radiation protection through architectural planning.

The Regional Environmental Planning Lab studies the outdoor physical environment: air temperature, humidity, wind, and solar radiation. Using numerical simulation such as CFD (computational fluid dynamics) together with environmental measurement techniques, the lab covers everything from understanding actual conditions to prediction, analysis, and evaluation. The lab aims to create urban outdoor environments where people can live safely, comfortably, and healthily, even under future climates as climate change progresses. The lab has long worked on heat countermeasures for cities, such as urban greening and control of solar reflection.

The Life Cycle Engineering Lab studies building materials and construction methods, focusing mainly on cementitious materials. The lab develops new materials and construction methods as needed, and builds techniques for evaluating their performance. It clarifies the mechanisms by which materials deteriorate, and applies the findings to building maintenance and longer service life. From construction to the end of use, the lab examines issues across the entire life cycle from the perspective of materials science.

The Performance Control Systems Lab (Maeda Lab) studies buildings and cities that are safe and secure against disasters such as earthquakes. Its subjects include higher-performance reinforced concrete structures, urban timber buildings using CLT, and brick masonry buildings overseas. Its research field extends from its local area of Sendai and Miyagi to all of Japan, and further overseas. The lab has a network of joint research with universities, construction companies, design firms, and government agencies in Japan and abroad.

The Adaptive Design Engineering Lab studies the performance that buildings should deliver under disaster scenarios such as earthquakes and tsunamis. By combining experiments, analysis, and field surveys, the lab builds the foundations for rationally designing that performance. It evaluates not only the structural members of buildings but also the process by which non-structural elements, such as partition walls, become damaged. After an earthquake, the lab goes to the affected site to investigate what kind of damage buildings have suffered.
