Yukio Takahashi, Professor
0 student voices
Takahashi Lab studies measurement and imaging techniques that use synchrotron X-rays to see inside materials. Practical materials and devices have heterogeneous structures that span scales from atoms to millimeters. The lab captures these structures, along with the changes that drive performance and degradation, at nanoscale resolution and over time. Using NanoTerasu in Aobayama and the large synchrotron radiation facility SPring-8, the lab develops its own new measurement and analysis methods.

Muto-Nishimoto Lab investigates electrochemical reactions on metal surfaces at the molecular, atomic, and electronic levels. The aim is to create corrosion-resistant alloys and technologies that prevent corrosion. Because the surfaces of real materials are not uniform, the lab uses micro- and nanoscale electrochemical measurements, chemical imaging, and scanning probe microscopy. By observing metals dissolving in situ, the lab analyzes reactivity at the nanoscale and develops technologies to control it.
Yuji Suto, Professor

Suto-Ando Lab studies how to bring out the performance and functions of materials through phase control and interface control. Its work spans the atomic scale, such as the states of electrons and chemical bonds, up to the nano- and microscale of crystal microstructures. The targets range from devices that handle electricity to devices that function as structural materials. The lab develops next-generation phase-change memory materials and a shape-memory magnesium alloy, the first of its kind discovered in the world.

The Yoshimi-Sekido-Kaneko Lab focuses on the strength of materials and high-temperature materials science. Its subjects are the structural materials that support daily life, from plants, buildings, and bridges to automobiles, Shinkansen trains, passenger aircraft, and rockets. Because the properties of structural materials change greatly depending on the environment in which they are used, the lab investigates what determines their lifetime from the perspectives of physics, chemistry, and mechanical engineering. Based on these findings, the lab presents guidelines for materials design and also creates new materials of its own.
Makoto Kohda, Professor

The Kohda-Suzuki-Ishihara Lab researches ultra-precise control of electron spin in semiconductors. Spintronics is a field that uses spin, the magnetism arising from an electron's rotation, to pursue functions that charge alone cannot achieve. Using the "electron spin wave," in which spin propagates while rotating through space, as a foothold, the lab explores new properties of spin in semiconductors. Based on this principle, the lab is developing functions for ultra-fast, ultra-low-power quantum computers and next-generation information processing devices.
Nobuki Tezuka, Professor

The Tezuka-Matsuura Lab researches the magnetic materials that support society. Magnetic materials are used in many everyday devices, including inductors, magnetic recording devices, magnetic sensors, transformers, speakers, and electric motors. The lab approaches the subject from two sides: making new materials and improving the functions of existing ones. Its research themes are functional magnetic materials, spintronics materials, permanent magnet materials, and high-frequency magnetic materials.
Hitoshi Takamura, Professor

The Takamura-Ishii Lab develops materials and devices that convert energy with high efficiency, in order to build a decarbonized society. One example is the solid oxide fuel cell, which can convert hydrogen into electricity with high efficiency. The lab also studies systems that produce high-purity hydrogen from natural gas, which are essential for the wider adoption of fuel cells. It also works on a wide variety of ceramics, including all-solid-state batteries (a next-generation type of rechargeable battery), exhaust gas purification catalysts, and display materials.
Yuta Saito, Professor

The Saito Lab creates new materials for electronic devices and investigates their properties. Its main subjects are two-dimensional layered materials, in which atoms are stacked in layers, and amorphous semiconductors, in which the atoms have no regular arrangement. The lab combines analysis using synchrotron radiation with simulations based on first-principles calculations and machine learning. Synchrotron experiments are conducted at NanoTerasu on Aobayama Campus and at SPring-8 in Hyogo Prefecture.
Hidemi Kato, Professor

The Kato Lab studies metallic glasses, which are attracting attention as new materials for social infrastructure, and their composites. A metallic glass is a non-crystalline alloy in which a supercooled liquid is frozen in place by rapid or gradual cooling. Because their atoms lack long-range order, metallic glasses show better mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and soft magnetic properties than crystalline alloys. The lab has also developed its own metallic-melt dealloying method, and has succeeded in making three-dimensional nanoporous structures from metals that previously could not be made nanoporous.
Momoji Kubo, Professor
0 student voices
The Kubo Lab uses computational science simulations to design systems and materials from theory. Its core is multiscale technology that connects nanoscale chemical reactions, mesoscale microstructures, and macroscale heat and fluid flow. The lab also handles phenomena in which chemical reactions, friction, impact, stress, fluid flow, light, electrons, heat, and electric fields are intricately intertwined, treating them all together. The target fields are wide-ranging, including fuel cells, aerospace equipment, electric vehicles, and semiconductor processes.
