Susumu Yamamoto, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The lab, known as the Synchrotron Nanostructure Visualization research field, uses synchrotron X-rays to visualize the state of electrons in materials at the nanoscale. Its goal is to establish design guidelines for developing materials with new functions. The lab independently develops measurement technologies and analysis methods that take advantage of the properties of synchrotron X-rays, and applies them to a wide range of new functional materials, from hard materials to soft matter. On the lab's website, the lab is introduced under the name "Takata Lab."

Masahiko Takahashi, Professor
0 student voices
The Takahashi Lab (Quantum Electron Science research field) conducts research that experimentally observes the wave functions of isolated molecules in the gas phase. Using electron momentum spectroscopy, which uses the scattering of high-speed electrons, the lab observes in momentum space the shapes of molecular orbitals, which determine the reactivity and functions of molecules. The lab also studies molecules in the middle of chemical reactions and the three-dimensional behavior of electrons when they collide with molecules. Its goals are original research in molecular science and the training of students and young researchers who will lead the next generation.

Shigefusa Chichibu, Professor
0 student voices
The Chichibu Lab (Quantum Optoelectronics Division) studies the physical properties of wide-bandgap compound semiconductors. The wide-bandgap compound semiconductors under study are expected to be applied to deep-ultraviolet light-emitting devices and to polariton lasers, which combine the functions of light and excitons. The lab can carry out everything from crystal growth and processing to prototype device fabrication, and has many instruments for optical characterization. The lab belongs to the Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, Tohoku University, and is a cooperative laboratory of the Department of Applied Physics, Graduate School of Engineering.

Shigemi Mizukami, Professor
0 student voices
The Spintronics Materials Lab studies materials and devices involving magnetism (spin). Focusing on how spin relates to charge, light, and quantum phenomena respectively, the lab covers everything from device materials to new measurement techniques. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Mizukami Lab."

Shimpei Ono, Professor
0 student voices
The Shimpei Ono Lab (Transdisciplinary Research Division, Multi-dimensional Measurement Smart Lab) takes "ions" as its keyword and works on a wide range of topics, from nanoscale device development to monitoring of social infrastructure. The lab pursues work from basic research to applied development, and collaborates with researchers around the world within an international network. The lab's mission is to manipulate ions to create the devices of the future. Inquiries about career consultation or lab visits are accepted through the contact information on the lab's page.

Yasuo Ando, Professor
0 student voices
The lab aims to develop medical applications of magnetic sensors based on tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) elements, known as TMR sensors. With support from Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and Spin Sensing Factory Inc., the lab was established in the Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University, on January 1, 2022. The lab is staffed by faculty members with knowledge of medicine as well as engineering, and conducts research by combining the three perspectives of engineering, medicine, and the pharmaceutical industry.
