Atsuki Komiya, Professor
0 student voices
The Komiya-Kanda Lab studies heat and mass transfer in extreme environments such as high-temperature fields, outer space, and the inside of micromachines. Using optical techniques, it visualizes and measures heat and mass transfer in a tiny world that cannot be seen with the naked eye. The lab applies what it learns to energy systems with a low environmental impact and to enhancing heat transfer by using phase change. It also works on controlling heat transfer inside living bodies, as in hyperthermia and cryotherapy.

Kaoru Maruta, Professor
0 student voices
The Maruta Lab studies the behavior of thermal fluids involving combustion and chemical reactions. With heat and mass recirculation as a keyword, the lab works on micro combustion, slow combustion, combustion in microgravity, control of catalytic reactions, and more. While pursuing industry-academia collaboration and joint research with institutions in Japan and abroad, the lab approaches these phenomena through both experiments and numerical computation, with an eye toward technologies based on new concepts. On the lab's website, it is presented under the shared name "Maruta/Morii Lab" together with the lab of Associate Professor Yuhi Morii.

Takehiko Sato, Professor

The Sato-Liu Lab studies the interaction between plasma flow and living organisms. The lab works on elucidating the processes by which cells are activated or inactivated, developing plasma-based sterilization methods, and clarifying the reactions and flow mechanisms of gas-liquid plasma. It aims to build the scientific foundations of "plasma medicine," which is expected to become a next-generation medical technology, and to connect them to applications. The lab also analyzes nanosecond discharges in liquid and cavitation microjets produced by the shock waves that accompany those discharges.

Koji Amezawa, Professor
0 student voices
The Amezawa Lab studies "solid state ionics," in which ions move rapidly within solids. To make fuel cells and lithium-ion batteries that rely on this property widely usable, the lab conducts fundamental research on materials. It investigates the mechanisms of ion transport, reactions at material interfaces, and the structure of crystal defects. The lab also develops analytical techniques for measuring devices while they operate in special environments, such as high temperatures and controlled atmospheres.

Hitoshi Muneoka, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Muneoka Lab studies what happens when plasma meets fluids in extreme environments. In environments far removed from everyday conditions, such as high pressure, low temperature, and ultrahigh temperature, the lab generates plasma by electrical discharge or laser and measures it using light and electricity. By understanding how plasma interacts with the surrounding fluids and solids, the lab aims to lead to new ways of making materials and environmentally friendly manufacturing processes. On the lab's website, it is presented together with the work of Professor Shigeta and Assistant Professor Sugimoto as the "Fluid Energy Engineering Division (Shigeta-Muneoka-Sugimoto Lab)."

Yuta Kimura, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Kimura Lab studies materials for solid state ionics, the field concerned with ions moving through solids. The lab precisely measures the amount of defects that form in crystals and investigates how they change the properties of materials. It also focuses on the stress applied to materials inside all-solid-state batteries, and explores whether material properties can be controlled by applying force. Based on the scientific principles obtained, the lab designs material functions and develops materials, working toward environmentally friendly energy conversion devices. On the lab's website, it is presented under the name "Amezawa Lab" (Solid State Ionics and Devices Research Field).

Kaoru Maruta, Professor
0 student voices
The Morii Lab studies the behavior of thermal fluids involving combustion and chemical reactions. With the recirculation of heat and mass as a keyword, the lab approaches the fundamentals of combustion phenomena through both experiments and numerical computation. It also investigates the ignitability of substances used in familiar devices, such as refrigerants and the electrolytes of lithium-ion batteries. The lab's website is shared with the lab of Professor Kaoru Maruta, and the lab is presented there under the name "Maruta/Morii Lab."

Kazuhisa Sato, Professor
0 student voices
The Sato-Yamaguchi Lab studies "energy circulation systems" for achieving carbon neutrality. Using mechanics of materials and strength of materials as its academic foundation, the lab works on fuel cells that generate electricity from hydrogen and batteries that store electricity. It is also developing electrolysis cells that produce hydrogen from steam and all-solid-state batteries for use in space. The lab is also developing evaluation techniques for battery materials, which are essential for bringing new batteries into practical use quickly.

Yusuke Mukuhira, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Mukuhira Lab studies the forces acting on underground rock masses, and the movement of fractures and fluids within the rock. Combining rock mechanics and geophysics, the lab continues research related to the use of the subsurface, including energy development. Its topics include methods of measuring crustal stress, geological storage of carbon dioxide, development of methane hydrate and shale, and geothermal development. The lab aims to contribute to curbing global warming and to realizing a sustainable society.

Soshi Kawai, Professor
0 student voices
The Kawai-Asada-Kawai Lab studies high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics simulation that makes it possible to predict and control the complex flows around aircraft and spacecraft. It aims to greatly reduce reliance on actual flight tests and bring digital innovation to the development of aircraft and spacecraft. Based on compressible fluid dynamics, it covers a broad range of fields, from computational science to data-driven science and machine learning. The lab conducts its research using cutting-edge supercomputers, including RIKEN's Fugaku.
