Miyabi Imai-Imada, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Imai-Imada Lab studies methods for measuring the optical properties of individual molecules at atomic-level resolution. The lab has independently developed "optical STM," which combines the mechanisms of optics with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Using this instrument, it investigates the relationship among the structure, electronic states, and optical functions of organic electronics materials, and it is also taking on the measurement of biomolecules. The lab also doubles as a RIKEN research team, with bases at both Ookayama and Wako.
Shingo Kazama, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Kazama Lab uses experiments to investigate the nature of dark matter, which cannot be seen with light. Using data from XENONnT, one of the world's largest liquid xenon experiments, operating underground in Italy, the lab searches for dark matter and rare phenomena. Within the university, the lab is also developing detectors with extremely low radioactivity for XLZD, a future large-scale experiment. The lab is a small group that started in April 2026, and it welcomes consultations about research from students of any year.
Hatakeyama Tetsuhiro, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Hatakeyama Lab studies problems in universal biology, biophysics, and systems biology, mainly using theoretical methods. Its goal is research that, once the results are known, changes how we see living things and biological phenomena. The lab looks for universal properties that hold across a wide range of organisms, regardless of individual details. Based at the Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI), the lab accepts students and researchers.
Daiki Nishiguchi, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Nishiguchi Lab studies the physics of active matter, which consists of assemblies of self-propelled objects. Using swimming bacteria and artificial microparticles (Janus particles) that start swimming when an electric field is applied, the lab experimentally investigates the motion of swarms. By comparing the results with theory and numerical computation, it clarifies what kinds of order and fluctuations appear within a swarm. The lab also studies the mechanism of the thin hair-like appendages on the bacterial surface (type IV pili) from the viewpoint of nonequilibrium physics.
Takashi Mukaiyama, Professor
0 student voices
The Mukaiyama Lab uses ultracold atoms and ions produced by laser cooling to study quantum properties of matter and develop quantum technologies. Using the force of laser light and electric fields, the lab traps atoms and ions in a vacuum and cools them to extremely low temperatures, close to absolute zero. Beyond laser technology, experiments combine a variety of techniques, including vacuum technology, electronic circuits, and programming.
Masaki Uchida, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Uchida Lab conducts research in condensed matter physics, studying the properties that electrons exhibit in solids. Using a method called molecular beam epitaxy, the lab fabricates very high-quality thin films of topological materials and strongly correlated materials, as well as artificial layered structures. Using the films it makes, the lab explores the principles of quantum phenomena that appear in how electric current flows (quantum transport). Each year, lab information sessions and lab visits are planned both for undergraduate students and for prospective graduate students.
Takuya Satoh, Professor
0 student voices
The Satoh Lab uses ultrashort-pulse lasers and other tools to control and measure magnetic and chiral materials. The lab aims to directly manipulate electron spins with light pulses, achieving fast and free control. The lab is developing ways to generate spin waves with light without using heat, aiming to open up a new field called 'optomagnonics.' The lab is recruiting undergraduate thesis students and graduate students, and lab visits are welcome at any time.
Daisuke Jido, Professor
0 student voices
The Jido Lab theoretically studies the physical phenomena produced by the strong interaction, one of the forces of nature, in atomic nuclei and hadrons. The lab aims to understand the structure and dynamics of hadrons such as protons and neutrons from the behavior of the quarks and gluons inside them. The lab also investigates how the properties of hadrons change when they are placed inside atomic nuclei. To visit the lab, you can inquire by email.
Hiroyuki Fujioka, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Fujioka Lab studies nuclear physics, in the broad sense, through experiments. The lab is distinctive in using atomic nuclei not as the object of study in themselves, but as a means of investigating the properties and interactions of hadrons, which are particles made up of quarks. Since its founding, the lab has kept taking on new challenges under the keyword 'Let's do front-line research.' Students who plan to find a job after finishing the master's program are also welcome.
Takashi Nakamura, Professor
0 student voices
Nakamura Lab studies new quantum phenomena of atomic nuclei using short-lived nuclei that do not exist in nature (unstable nuclei). In particular, it uses reactions of neutron-rich nuclei, which have a very large number of neutrons, to explore the mysteries of matter and the evolution of the universe. Experiments are carried out jointly with research groups in Japan and abroad, mainly at the RI Beam Factory at RIKEN in Wako, Saitama Prefecture. The lab is in charge of developing the neutron detector NEBULA, which is used with the SAMURAI experimental apparatus at this facility.
