The Tateyama-Ando Lab studies rechargeable batteries, catalysts, fuel cells, and solar cells using theory, computation, and data science. Using supercomputers, the lab runs calculations to investigate what happens inside materials at the level of atoms and electrons. Its main tools are first-principles calculations (density functional theory) and molecular dynamics, and it also works on machine learning and large-scale data generation. The lab also develops the computational methods and programs this work requires on its own.

Arai Lab takes on the science of energy devices that can transform society. For batteries, including rechargeable batteries, the lab observes the reactions occurring inside electrodes while the battery is operating (operando). The lab covers a wide range of battery systems, including zinc negative electrodes, air electrodes that use oxygen as the active material, and all-solid-state batteries. Based on the problems revealed through observation, the lab improves lifetime and performance, working toward creating new science that opens up the future.

Motokura-Manaka Lab conducts research to create new catalysts and new catalysis. A catalyst is a key material for controlling chemical reactions, and high-performance catalysts make the production of substances more efficient. The lab develops catalysts in which metal complexes, organic molecules, and functional groups on support surfaces work cooperatively, accelerating reactions or allowing sequential reactions to proceed in a single vessel. Without being bound by the distinction between solid catalysts and molecular catalysts, the lab aims to realize environmentally benign chemical reactions with catalysts that go beyond conventional concepts.

The Waki Lab uses chemical methods to control the nanoscale structure of carbon nanotubes and zinc oxide nanorods. Through this, the lab aims to improve the performance of electrochemical devices such as fuel cells, solar cells, and lithium batteries. Without being bound by conventional methodologies, faculty and students work together to create new battery electrode materials. The lab's goal is to contribute, even if only a little, to solving problems of energy, the environment, and resources.

The Wada Lab studies the synthesis and applications of nanomaterials at the interface of chemistry and physics. Its distinctive method is laser ablation in liquid, in which laser light is focused on a target placed in a liquid. The resulting nanoparticles are connected to bioimaging, cancer therapy, solar cells, and white light-emitting diodes. Using optical thin films and light scattering, the lab also works on fabricating white solar cell modules that can be installed on building walls.

The Toyoda Lab studies how trace gases, such as greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting gases, circulate at the Earth's surface. The lab develops methods to measure, with high precision, the concentrations and stable isotope ratios of very minor components in environmental samples. In addition to collecting and analyzing samples on land, in the atmosphere, and in the ocean, the lab simulates environments in the laboratory to investigate reaction mechanisms. Undergraduate graduation research and graduate research supervision are carried out in cooperation with the Yamada Lab in the same Department of Chemical Science and Engineering.

The Tomita-Hifumi Lab studies the creation of reactive polymers and their applications, based on organic chemistry and organometallic chemistry. The lab develops new polymerization reactions themselves in order to make materials with structures and functions never seen before. Its main pillars are living polymerization of allenes, polymers containing metals in the main chain, and polycondensation that joins multiple components at once. The polymers it makes are being extended to materials that modify the surfaces of inorganic materials and to materials with optical and electrical properties.

The Tsukahara Lab is working to create chemical processes that enable the circulation of resources, the environment, and energy. The lab uses materials synthesis that combines organic and inorganic components at the molecular level, along with nanotechnology such as microfabrication. It creates organic-inorganic hybrid materials and devices in which sequence, structure, interfaces, and space are skillfully controlled. Built on analytical chemistry, solution chemistry, polymer chemistry, and nuclear and radiochemistry, the research also connects with physics, mechanical engineering, and biology.

The Ishizone Lab studies the design and synthesis of new polymers, with polymer synthesis as its theme. Some polymers dissolve in water, some mix well with oil, some are hard, and some are soft. The lab considers the relationship between the properties polymers show and their molecular structures. What structure of polymer should be synthesized to bring out an interesting property or function? Members advance their research by constantly asking themselves this question. Because reactions that are sensitive to water and air are carried out in sealed glass vessels, the experiments require glassblowing skills.

The Konishi Lab pursues the science of light and studies organic π-electron molecules and functional polymers with unique photofunctions. Launched as a lab for the synthesis of condensation polymers, it has broadened its research by adding experience in photochemistry and physiology to the structure and properties of polymers. From photochemistry, organic synthesis, and polymer synthesis to photofunctional materials, life science, and quantum chemistry and information science, the lab offers themes that match each student's interests and individuality. The lab values students' free thinking and inspiration, and also carries out many joint research projects with researchers in other fields.
