Xavier Xavier Défago, Professor
0 student voices
The Xavier Défago Lab studies distributed systems, in which many computers and robots connected by a network carry out tasks while communicating with one another. The lab designs distributed algorithms that make distributed systems run correctly, safely, and efficiently. The lab is interested in problems that lie between the theory of algorithms and the practice of actually running them. Its work includes cooperative behavior of robots, development of robots for experiments, fundamental theory for secure communication, and applications of blockchain technology.

Tsuyoshi Murata, Professor
0 student voices
The Murata Lab researches artificial intelligence, particularly network science, machine learning, and Web mining. The lab focuses on the structure of networks, which represent the connections between things, and works on discovering knowledge from that structure. The lab studies deep learning methods for graph-structured data, such as graph neural networks. From information on the Internet, the lab also discovers related elements, determines the importance of elements, and estimates future connections.

Takashi Takashi Ishida, Professor
0 student voices
The Takashi Ishida Lab develops computational methods for solving problems in biology. Its main focus areas are protein structure prediction, drug discovery, and applications of machine learning to biology. The lab builds methods based on machine learning, probabilistic models, and algorithm design, aiming for algorithms that are fast, accurate, and interpretable. In recent years, through collaborations with the School of Medicine and the School of Dentistry, the lab has also been analyzing clinical data.

Nishizaki Shin-Ya, Professor
0 student voices
The Nishizaki Lab (Lambda Laboratory) studies programming language theory, type systems, and formal methods, along with their applications. It develops ways to verify mathematically, before a program is run, that the program will behave as expected. Building on the lambda calculus, the lab develops theories that treat computational mechanisms such as environments and continuations as values. Using model checking, it also verifies the safety and reliability of communication protocols, web servers, and similar systems.

Takashi Takashi Kobayashi, Professor
0 student voices
The Takashi Kobayashi Lab studies software engineering, particularly software maintenance and design support. It takes an approach of analyzing large amounts of software artifacts to discover information that is useful for supporting development. The analysis targets include not only source code and execution histories, but also the histories of development activities. The lab builds support methods and tools by combining static and dynamic analysis techniques with natural language processing, data mining, and machine learning.

Yutaka Akiyama, Professor
0 student voices
The Akiyama Lab studies techniques for analyzing large-scale data in medicine, pharmacy, and biology, as well as large-scale simulation. It aims to apply this work to elucidating the causes of human disease, supporting drug discovery, and analyzing microbes in the environment. Both analysis and simulation make full use of supercomputers and the cloud. In drug discovery, the lab works on molecular dynamics simulation, docking simulation, and applications of machine learning.

Misako Takayasu, Professor
0 student voices
The Takayasu Lab analyzes phenomena across a wide range of fields using methods from statistical physics, statistical science, and information science. It observes phenomena through big data on human activity, the economy, and biological information, and builds minimal mathematical models that reproduce them. Using the models it builds, the lab seeks to understand complex systems through theoretical analysis and simulation. The lab has a big data analysis room equipped with security technology, and serves as a research hub for econophysics, sociophysics, and life science.

Gondow Katsuhiko, Professor
0 student voices
The Gondow Lab studies software development tools that support program developers. Today's software has grown beyond a million lines, far larger than humans alone can develop. Existing tools such as debuggers, version control systems, and integrated development environments still leave room for improvement. The lab's approach is to enjoy the intellectual work of programming while implementing tools that can be used on real-world software.

Haruhiko Haruhiko Kaneko, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Haruhiko Kaneko Lab studies coding techniques that make computer systems highly reliable and efficient. One of them is error-control codes, which detect and correct data that has been corrupted during storage or transmission. The codes it works on are wide-ranging, including synchronization error correction, constrained codes, LDPC codes, and polar codes. The lab also works on data compression, code-based post-quantum cryptography, and dependable computing.

Jun Jun Miyazaki, Professor
0 student voices
The Jun Miyazaki Lab studies large-scale information management, including data-oriented large-scale and high-performance computing and cloud computing. Making use of multicore CPUs, GPUs, and new memory technologies, the lab develops methods for processing large amounts of data efficiently. The lab also works on techniques for efficiently accessing big data accumulated in cloud storage. The lab is also advancing research on recommender systems that retrieve the information a user intends from within vast amounts of information.
