Asanao Shimokawa, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Shimokawa Lab centers on applied statistics and machine learning, and studies survival analysis and tree-structured models. Its past work also includes image classification using genetic algorithms, symbolic data analysis, analysis of stratified contingency tables, and outlier detection. Recent research topics are survival analysis with a focus on prediction, and calculating the amount of allergy-friendly food that needs to be stockpiled.

Akifumi Sako
0 student voices
The Sako Lab studies mathematical physics and mathematics education. Quantum field theory, gauge theory, and string theory, which describe the laws of physics, are still incomplete in places. The lab studies ways to solve these problems using noncommutative geometry and category theory. Many students aiming to become mathematics teachers belong to the lab, and they also work on developing new mathematics teaching materials and teaching methods.

Takao Satoh
0 student voices
The Satoh Lab's research fields are algebraic topology, homological algebra, combinatorial group theory, group cohomology, Lie algebra cohomology, and representation theory. Objects of study include automorphism groups of free groups and others, mapping class groups of surfaces, braid groups, and loop braid groups. Derivations of free Lie algebras and trace algebras are also objects of study.

Keiko Kotani, Professor
0 student voices
The Kotani Lab studies graph theory, a branch of discrete mathematics. Graph theory is a field that studies 2-element subsets of a finite set. The Four Color Theorem, which states that any map can be colored with four or fewer colors, is one of the famous theorems of graph theory. The lab studies factor theory within graph theory, in particular sufficient conditions for the existence of regular factors.

Yasufumi Nitta, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Nitta Lab studies the geometry of spaces called “manifolds,” which generalize curves and surfaces. The lab mainly considers complex manifolds and focuses on how they “curve.” Recently, the lab has been particularly interested in the relationship with stability in the sense of geometric invariant theory (the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture).

Takenori Kataoka, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Kataoka Lab studies number theory, a branch of algebra. The lab works on research in number theory centered on Iwasawa theory. Its research topic is “the structure of number-theoretic modules.”

Yuki Tadokoro, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Tadokoro Lab studies Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces, within the field of geometry. Its research topic is the complex-analytic invariants of moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces. Associate Professor Yuki Tadokoro has worked on this topic since 2006. Research keywords include mapping class groups, discrete Riemann surfaces, and iterated integrals.

Isao Saito, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Saito Lab studies operator theory, a branch of functional analysis. Rather than examining individual functions, functional analysis studies actions on the space formed by collections of functions (function spaces). Differentiation and integration can also be understood as operators on function spaces. The lab takes normal operators, the easiest to handle among the various kinds of operators, as its foundation, and goes on to study more general operators.
