Kaori Ito, Professor
0 student voices
The Ito Lab studies how urban and regional space should be shaped, in the fields of urban planning and architectural planning. Professor Kaori Ito's research keywords are urban design, urban analytics, and urban planning. Lecturer Seiya Takayanagi's research keywords include regional planning, landscape planning, community development (machizukuri), and GIS.
Manabu Kanematsu, Professor
0 student voices
The Kanematsu Lab conducts research centered on building materials science and concrete engineering, from the perspectives of durability, maintenance and preservation, and reduction of environmental impact. The lab's research introduction page lists the challenges it works on, including durability design of reinforced concrete structures, methods for maintaining and preserving buildings, technologies using neutrons, and low-environmental-impact material technologies. Lab visits are accepted at any time for third-year students in the Department of Architecture.
Nozomu Yoshizawa, Professor
0 student voices
The Yoshizawa Lab studies light in architecture, that is, lighting and the luminous environment. Adjusting the quantity and quality of light requires considering not only visual beauty but also various other aspects, such as ease of seeing and energy efficiency. The lab's main aim is to develop, through surveys of real spaces and scale-model experiments, methods that determine the behavior of light with lighting simulation and use the results to predict how architectural spaces will look. Methods for introducing daylight into museums and ways of using LED lighting are also listed among its research themes.
Yoshiyuki Yamana, Professor
0 student voices
The Yamana Lab studies the history of modern and contemporary architecture, and its preservation and reuse. The lab investigates how reinforced concrete technology spread in former French Indochina (such as Vietnam and Cambodia), as well as the architecture of covered markets. It also researches modern and contemporary architecture in Japan, including a survey of the prefabricated wooden houses designed by Junzo Sakakura.
Yoshinori Kakino, Professor
0 student voices
Kakino Lab is grounded in architectural planning, which captures the relationship between human behavior and space and applies it to architectural design. The lab believes that people live in response to the "whispers of architecture." These whispers are hard to perceive and are often drowned out, but the lab wants to listen to them carefully and apply them to architectural design.
Yoshifumi Omiya
0 student voices
Omiya Lab studies fire safety engineering, which concerns the fire safety of buildings. Within building disaster prevention, the lab covers a broad range that nearly spans fire resistance, evacuation, smoke control, airflow behavior, combustion behavior, and safety assessment. Aiming to contribute to making the Building Standards Act performance-based, the lab starts from fundamental research.
Yuji Miyazu, Professor
0 student voices
Miyazu Lab studies technologies for creating buildings that are safe against earthquakes, mainly targeting timber buildings. The lab works on developing vibration control and seismic isolation technologies, clarifying how buildings shake during earthquakes, and rationalizing structural systems. The lab also develops seismic technologies suited not only to wooden houses but also to mid-rise and high-rise timber buildings, which are expected to increase in the future.
Masayuki Nagano, Professor
0 student voices
The Nagano Lab studies how buildings shake during earthquakes, focusing on the effects of the ground. Earthquake shaking varies greatly depending on whether the ground is soft or hard, and the interaction between the ground and a building also changes how the building moves. In Japan, a country prone to earthquakes, a building's seismic performance is strongly affected by the ground, so the lab considers it important to clarify these effects. The lab deals with the whole chain from the occurrence of an earthquake to how buildings shake, investigating it through observation and analysis.
Hideyuki Kinugasa, Professor
0 student voices
The Kinugasa Lab studies seismic design, urban disaster prevention, and concrete structures in the field of building structures and materials. Its research keywords include structural engineering, economic loss from earthquakes, earthquake damage and functional recovery, and reinforced concrete structures. Currently, the lab is working on research on the seismic performance of cities.
Osamu Nishida, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Nishida Lab takes architectural design and urban placemaking as its research topics. Its fields are urban planning and architectural planning, spanning architectural design studies, architectural design, and community development. Associate Professor Osamu Nishida is engaged in architectural design and community development while serving as the representative of OnDesign Partners. Associate Professor Nishida has received awards including the Good Design Award and a Special Mention of the Jury at the Venice Biennale.
