Kazunori Harada, Professor
0 student voices
The Harada Lab studies how fires in buildings spread and how to design and construct buildings that are fire-safe from an engineering standpoint. The lab investigates and models how combustibles burn and spread fire inside rooms, the combustibility of interior finishing materials, how smoke spreads in rooms, and the thermal behavior of structural members. The fire resistance of timber buildings is also a research subject, and the lab conducts experiments and builds theoretical models. To apply its results in practice, the lab also studies methods for performance-based fire safety design of buildings.
Ritsu Dobashi, Professor
0 student voices
The Dobashi Lab studies the phenomena and risks of disasters such as gas explosions, dust explosions, and fire whirls. The lab's areas of expertise are fire safety, gas and dust explosion safety, and combustion science. The lab aims to use its evaluation results to prevent disasters and reduce risk.
Ken Matsuyama, Professor
0 student voices
The Matsuyama Lab studies how fires burn (fire behavior) in the field of fire safety engineering. Its research topic is the development of fire behavior models used in performance-based fire safety design (performance-based design). Titles of recent papers include the heating characteristics of fire resistance furnaces, fire-resistant timber beams for taller timber buildings, and the burning behavior of seats for railway vehicles.
Kazunori Kuwana, Professor
0 student voices
The Kuwana Lab lists fires, explosions, fire whirls, and combustion as its research keywords. Prof. Kuwana's research history includes fire whirls, gas explosions, the transition from smoldering to flaming combustion, forest fire spread simulation, and dust explosion simulation. A listed research topic is the development of a data-driven wildfire spread simulator applicable to diverse weather conditions. It is recorded that in 2025 Prof. Kuwana was engaged in research on the Ofunato City wildfire.
Masafumi Hosokawa, Professor
0 student voices
The Hosokawa Lab studies natural disaster science and disaster prevention, with disaster prevention information, firefighting, post-earthquake fires, and remote sensing as its keywords. Prof. Hosokawa is a Professor in the Department of Global Fire Science and Technology, Graduate School of Science and Technology, Tokyo University of Science. A listed research topic is a comprehensive survey study of the 2025 Ofunato City wildfire. Prof. Hosokawa has served as Head of the Earthquake and Other Disasters Research Office and as Director for Research Coordination at the National Research Institute of Fire and Disaster, Fire and Disaster Management Agency, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
