Keiko Sato, Professor
0 student voices
The Sato Lab does research in bioinformatics, using ideas from information theory to study biological phenomena from the information carried in genes and DNA. Through basic concepts such as information content and codes, the lab considers how biological information is transmitted and processed, and the mathematics that describes the dynamics of biological change. To detect intractable cancers early and build a foundation for developing molecularly targeted therapy, the lab also studies the relationship between patterns of gene expression and mutation and the course of disease.
Hidefumi Ohmura, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Ohmura Lab studies music using the methods of information science. Its research themes include automatic generation of melodies based on emotion, clarifying the relationship between emotion and musical structure, and designing socially adaptive agents. Its research topics also include building a unified theory of musical temperament based on geometric relationships. Its research record includes studies of music and emotion, creativity in music, computational music theory, and virtual reality and mixed reality.
Unregistered Unregistered, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Unregistered Lab studies medical statistics methodology and data analysis for medical research. Establishing a new treatment requires evaluating its efficacy and safety, and medical statistics methodology is used for that evaluation. Working with genomic science specialists, the lab also conducts comprehensive gene expression analysis, with the aim of developing molecularly targeted cancer drugs.
Nobuko Miyamoto, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Miyamoto Lab studies combinatorial designs, combinatorial arrays, and the combinatorial structures of finite geometries, among other topics. In optical fiber communication, the lab found a way to construct optical orthogonal codes, which are used to extract the signal addressed to oneself from overlapping signals, using lines in a projective plane. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Miyamoto Lab / Discrete Mathematics Lab." The content of the lab's website dates from around fiscal year 2019.
Tomofumi Matsuzawa, Professor
0 student voices
The Matsuzawa Lab takes information and communication networks as its foundation and works on research that combines them with AI, image analysis, drones, and more. Research topics are not decided unilaterally by the faculty; they start from the students' own interests and ideas. In graduation research, the emphasis is less on specialized knowledge itself than on acquiring an objective perspective and logical thinking. In summer, the lab holds a mid-term presentation as a retreat, which gives students a chance to receive advice from alumni and guests.
Koichi Katsurada, Professor
0 student voices
The Katsurada Lab conducts research on artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and neuroscience, centered on the processing of media such as speech, music, images, and natural language. It focuses in particular on speech synthesis, speech recognition, and machine lip reading based on articulatory movements, the movements of the lips and tongue when a person speaks. The lab is divided into groups for speech information processing, facial image processing, and artificial intelligence and machine learning. The lab encourages its members to present at conferences in Japan and abroad.
Yukio Uematsu, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Uematsu Lab conducts research centered on information retrieval technology and large-scale data mining. It develops methods for efficiently extracting the necessary information from large amounts of data and presenting it to users in the most suitable form. The lab also pays attention to the integration of generative AI and RAG with information retrieval, and pursues practical research.
Masanari Asano, Professor
0 student voices
The Asano Lab conducts research on extending decision theory, building on quantum information theory. Its fields are mathematical physics and the fundamentals of condensed matter physics, covering quantum information theory and quantum cognition. Its research topics also include applications to quantum computation theory.
Munehiro Takimoto, Professor
0 student voices
The Takimoto Lab studies the common ground between software and hardware in computer science, as well as the areas around it. As application software keeps growing larger, CPU processing power has hit a plateau, so computer science now calls for more rigorous analysis and new ideas. Research themes include a common infrastructure for compilers, which translate programming languages into machine code, as well as artificial intelligence and user interfaces that give a tangible sense of operation. The lab welcomes people who want to help open up a new kind of computer science together.
Koji Tahata, Professor
0 student voices
The Tahata Lab studies the mathematical theory of probability and statistics. In many fields, including medicine and public policy, decision-making based on rational evidence is required, and statistical science plays an important role in producing that evidence. Through research, students develop the ability (applied skills) to work with data properly. In the university's researcher information, the research fields of Professor Koji Tahata are listed as statistical science (categorical data analysis) and mathematical foundations and applied mathematics (contingency table analysis).
