Saneyuki Kawabata, Professor
Food & Agriculture1 student voices
The Institute for Sustainable Agro-ecosystem Services studies how agriculture and forestry relate to ecosystem services, the benefits that nature provides. Based at Tanashi Campus, where cropland, green space, and forest form a continuous landscape, the institute carries out education and research that connect farm fields with society. Labs (Cooperating Chairs) from several departments of the Graduate School are located here and work on crop production and cultivation techniques, plant ecology, and more. Students in the Major in Landscape Ecology and Planning can also carry out their graduation thesis research here.

Takehito Yoshida, Professor
Environment & Sustainability1 student voices
The Conservation Ecology Lab studies how human activities affect ecosystems and biodiversity, and how to conserve and restore them. Ecosystem services, the benefits that ecosystems provide to people, and the relationship between people and nature are also important themes. The lab's work goes beyond ecology as a branch of biology. It includes research that combines ecology with other natural sciences and with the humanities and social sciences, as well as research conducted in collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders in society. The subjects of study are wide-ranging, from aquatic organisms to wild animals living in cities.

Toshiya Okuro, Professor

The Landscape Ecology and Planning Lab studies methods for restoring, conserving, and creating green space environments (landscapes) where people and nature can coexist. The lab approaches this from two sides: ecology, which explains environmental phenomena, and planning, which applies research findings to society. Its study areas are the varied regions that surround people, including satoyama (rural landscapes of villages and adjacent woodlands), cities, and drylands.

Wei Guo, Associate Professor
AI & Machine Learning1 student voices
The Guo Lab researches technologies that evaluate the growth and performance of living organisms, from the cellular level to the population level. Using image pattern recognition, machine learning, and sensing technologies, the lab develops algorithms and applications that measure quickly and with high accuracy. The lab is an endowed chair established in November 2021 with financial support from Sarabetsu Village in Hokkaido. The lab also works to speed up the social implementation of these new technologies so that they are used in actual farming settings.

Toru Terada, Associate Professor
Civil Engineering, Architecture & Urban0 student voices
The Urban and Landscape Planning Lab studies methods for evaluating, planning, and designing cities and regions from a landscape perspective. A landscape perspective views cities and regions as expressions of the relationships among climate, topography, ecosystems, daily life, and culture. Using green spaces, trees, and farmland as clues, the lab explores sustainable urban forms in which human activity and the natural environment are in harmony. Students come from a wide range of fields, including civil engineering, architecture, ecology, and economics.

Sugimoto Koichi, Associate Professor
Bio & Life Sciences0 student voices
The Sugimoto Lab studies the eater–eaten relationship between plants and the animals that eat them (herbivores). It focuses in particular on whether the invisible volatile compounds (scents) that plants emit repel or attract herbivores. Combining behavioral experiments with herbivores and chemical analysis of plant components, the lab investigates the underlying mechanisms down to the molecular level. The findings are expected to contribute to developing pest management technologies that use less pesticide.
