The Biological Machinery Engineering Lab studies "bioenergy" and "bioproduction machinery." The lab works on energy derived from living organisms, such as producing fuel feedstock from algae and making biogas and ethanol from biomass. In agriculture, to improve work efficiency while reducing environmental impact, the lab studies autonomous vehicles and weeding robots that work precisely without human operators. Other themes include robotic boats for managing aquatic plants in lakes and automating the production of dried persimmons with robots.

The Biological and Environmental Engineering Lab mainly studies the relationship between plants and their environment at the tissue, organ, individual plant, and canopy levels. How organisms grow is influenced by their environment, and organisms in turn affect their environment through their living activities. By understanding this relationship, the lab aims to develop ways to make crop production more efficient, improve the quality of products, and help solve environmental problems. The lab works on topics at the boundary between engineering and biology, ranging from developing methods to control light, water, and gas environments to analyzing how photosynthesis responds to the environment.

The Environmental Soil and Water Science Lab studies the movement of water and chemical substances in soil. The lab combines laboratory experiments using small soil-packed tubes (columns), field measurements, and computer simulations. Its subjects include every kind of soil, from desert sand to peat soil in wetlands. The lab works to clarify the mechanisms behind soil-related problems such as desertification, salinization, soil contamination, soil erosion, and greenhouse gas emissions from soil.

The Irrigation and Water Environment Engineering Lab conducts research to sustain water resources and water environments in agricultural and rural areas. It studies agricultural irrigation and drainage systems, which deliver water to fields and carry away unneeded water, and develops methods for their rational design, operation and management, and low-labor maintenance. The lab also aims to create a healthy water cycle and waterside environments by conserving water quality and ecosystems in rural areas. Its research covers not only rural areas in Japan but also river basins in Laos.

The Farmland and Environmental Engineering Lab studies farmland and environmental problems based on the science of soil and water. Farmland around the world faces a range of environmental problems, including salt accumulation in arid regions, groundwater contamination from fertilizer runoff, and overuse of water resources. In Japan too, the foundations that support agriculture are at a major turning point, due to a shortage of farmers, the introduction of crops to replace rice, and advances in information and communication technology. The lab addresses these issues with methods suited to each subject, including field measurements, GIS, experiments with physical models, and computer simulations.

The Bioprocess Engineering Lab studies the science, engineering, and technology of food. The lab focuses on the processes that fruits, vegetables, and grains go through from harvest until they reach the dining table, including sorting, storage, processing, packaging, and transportation. During operations such as heating, drying, mixing, and shaping, heat and mass move inside the food and its structure changes. The lab aims to make these phenomena "visible" by combining experiments, measurements, and numerical simulation.

The Laboratory of Biological and Environmental Information Engineering studies information on living organisms and the environment using information engineering methods centered on image data. Its subjects span a wide range of scales, from individual plants and plant communities to ecosystems and regional and global environments. By measuring and analyzing this information, the lab aims to clarify the relationships between living organisms and the environment, and to propose solutions to real-world problems to society. The lab also aims to apply its research to food production, such as plant factories and precision agriculture, and to global environmental issues, such as global warming and biodiversity conservation.
