The Forest Zoology Lab studies the ecology and evolution of animals living in forests and in forest-related environments. The lab works with insects and soil fauna, using field surveys and experiments as well as laboratory experiments and analyses. Its scope is broad, covering evolution and adaptation, interactions among organisms, communities, and links to ecosystems and human activities. In graduate school, students choose their own research topics, make plans, and carry out their research.

The Forest Botany Lab studies the plants and microorganisms that grow and live in forests. Forest botany is an applied plant science that supports forest management, and it includes taxonomy, morphology, ecology, physiology, and genetics. The lab aims to maintain the health of forest ecosystems and of each individual tree. This field forms the foundation for forest cultivation and conservation, the conservation of rare species, and the control of tree diseases.

The Silviculture Lab studies how trees respond to their environment and the soils of forests. Silviculture is the discipline of growing healthy forests so that ecosystem services continue into the future without compromising the functioning of the ecosystem. Trees and forests take a long time to grow, and the environment changes during that time. The lab therefore covers a broad range of topics, from plant photosynthesis and growth and the cycling of materials in soil to the relationship between climate change and forests.
