The Forest Landscape Planning Lab studies the spatial relationship between nature and people and the landscapes that emerge from it. The lab treats as "environment" not only natural environments such as forests, but also the residential environments and communities where people live. Within this framework, it examines the roles that "greenery" and "nature" have played, from the perspective of landscapes and places for recreation. Drawing on psychology, sociology, geography, history, and legal and institutional studies, the lab conducts research from the standpoint of spatial planning theory, covering scales from the region down to the individual site.

The Forest Policy Lab studies the relationship between people and forests and mountains from the perspective of institutions and policy. Forestland is used in many ways, including timber production, tourism and recreation, and as a site of religious belief. Forest policy studies is the field that seeks to understand this relationship between people and forests and mountains. The lab draws on political science, economics, law, sociology, and folklore studies, and also uses questionnaire surveys, interviews, and fieldwork.

The Forest Utilization Lab studies the technology and science for maximizing the revenue obtained from forests. Focusing on forestry as a primary industry, the lab works on improving profitability and on making forest work safe and comfortable. Research combines field surveys in Japan and abroad with mathematical analysis in the lab. In undergraduate lectures and practicals, students learn through the main keywords of forestry machinery, forest roads, work systems, labor science, and biomass.

The Forest Biogeoscience Lab studies the mechanisms by which forests and the global environment influence each other. Its research spans scales from the cells of organisms to global vegetation zones, and from atmospheric turbulence to vegetation change over hundreds of years. The lab investigates how forests mitigate floods, how they contribute to the climate system, and how water and materials cycle through forest ecosystems. It also works to clarify the mechanisms of sediment movement in mountain forests, with the aim of applying the findings to sediment disaster countermeasures.

The Forest Management Lab studies how to plan and evaluate forest management so that forests can be managed sustainably. Forests produce timber, and at the same time they prevent mountain disasters, sustain water resources, provide habitat for wildlife, and absorb carbon dioxide. These roles are called public-benefit functions, and continuing to provide them requires proper planning and management. The lab also works, in both theory and practice, on forest measurement, growth prediction, and GIS, which form the foundation of forest planning.
