The Wood Physics Lab studies how tissues made by living organisms, wood above all, come to have their properties as materials. In addition to mechanical strength as a structural member in timber construction, wood has many other functions, such as regulating indoor humidity and absorbing vibration. Its physical properties are shaped by intertwined factors at many levels, from molecular and cell structure to the environment in which it is used. The lab also studies the physiological and psychological responses of people when they use wood, and how institutions and policies should be designed so that biological materials become established in society.

The Wood Material Science Lab conducts research to make the most effective use of wood as a structural material in buildings. In its basic research, the lab experimentally investigates how wood, a natural material with inconsistent quality, deforms and how strong it is. In its applied research, the lab works on the design of timber buildings, on improving the structural safety and durability of buildings, and on developing new construction methods. As an extracurricular activity, students have designed and built wooden pavilions and exhibited them at the May Festival (Gogatsusai).

The Environmental Materials Design Lab studies wood utilization together with the Endowed Chair of Wood Utilization Systems. The lab evaluates how using wood affects the global environment, regional economies, and society. It also studies the marketing of wood products and the policies that promote wood utilization. By combining natural science and social science, the lab aims to create a new research field on the processing, distribution, and use of wood.
