The Forest Biosphere Management Lab conducts research aimed at understanding, and taking action on, how to maintain the diversity of forests and the organisms that live in them. Forests are home to a wide variety of organisms, and they serve many functions, such as maintaining the global environment and providing resources that support our livelihoods. At the same time, forests face many problems, including shrinking area due to development and declining quality due to timber use. With a particular focus on the relationship with human activity, the lab aims to gain and propose the knowledge and technologies needed to sustain diverse and rich forests over the long term.

The Biodiversity Science Lab studies the mechanisms that maintain and disrupt ecosystem balance, focusing on the interactions between organisms and their environment. Ecosystems have the capacity to recover from a certain degree of disturbance, but in recent years biodiversity has been disappearing at a rate that exceeds this limit. Building on ecology, the lab works to clarify and predict how the abundance and diversity of organisms, the structure of food webs, and other features will change. The lab shares its findings with the world through papers, and also delivers them to society as concrete recommendations for protecting and managing ecosystems and biodiversity.

The Aquatic Conservation Lab aims for harmony between people and aquatic ecosystems, studying how their rich diversity arises and how it should be protected. In addition to coral reef ecosystems, the lab studies a wide range of aquatic organisms, including corals living in deeper continental shelf waters and river fish. While emphasizing fieldwork, the lab combines it with genetic analysis, rearing experiments, and collaboration with researchers from very different fields. Prospective graduate students are welcome, and lab visits are accepted at any time.
