Junji Nagata, Professor
0 student voices
The Nagata Lab studies agriculture and related activities, mainly in tropical and subtropical regions and in rural farming and mountain communities in Japan. Building on the methods of human geography, the lab analyzes them through a framework called the theory of social-ecological system change. The lab considers the phenomena before us to be the result of chains of human action unfolding within historically formed ecological and social environments. Through concrete, empirical discussion, the lab aims to make an original contribution to local communities in Japan and abroad, and to issues surrounding development and the environment.
Norio Narita, Professor
0 student voices
The Narita Lab discovers new planets outside the solar system (exoplanets) and uses observations to reveal their properties. For each planet it finds, the lab investigates its orbital period, mass, radius, orbit, atmosphere, and more. The lab also develops new instruments for observing exoplanets.
Kamakura Natsuki, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Kamakura Lab specializes in economic geography and industrial geography. Books by the lab's faculty member include The Economic Geography of Factories, which deals with factory location, and The Spatial Division of Labor in R&D Functions, which deals with the location of R&D sites of Japanese chemical companies. Associate Professor Kamakura belongs to the Research Organization for Regional Future Society Collaboration, and accepts graduate students in human geography in the Sub-department of General Systems Studies, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
Hirochika Sumino, Professor
0 student voices
The Sumino Lab studies the past and present of the Earth and the solar system by analyzing isotopes in natural samples such as meteorites, volcanic rocks, and volcanic gases. Using noble gas isotopes in particular as clues, the lab seeks to clarify the origin and history of chemical heterogeneity in the Earth's interior, as well as the course of the evolution of the atmosphere and oceans. For analysis, the lab uses mass spectrometers that it has developed in-house. The lab is run jointly, as a single lab, with the Hibiya Lab (Cosmic and Planetary Materials Evolution) at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology.
Shigeto Dobata, Professor
0 student voices
The Dobata Lab studies the mechanisms and evolution of societies in living organisms, focusing mainly on social insects such as ants. Evolutionary ecology is a branch of macrobiology that seeks to understand biodiversity based on the common principles of evolution. The lab moves back and forth between theory and empirical work as it pursues its research.
Seita Emori, Professor
0 student voices
Emori Lab studies the relationship between science and society surrounding climate change (global warming). The lab believes that differences in how people perceive and think about climate change arise not only from the accuracy of scientific knowledge, but also from the diverse values, positions, and interests present in society. Working with social scientists, the lab studies how to reflect citizen deliberation in policy proposals (climate assemblies) and how to incorporate perspectives such as ethics into the evaluation of energy technologies aimed at decarbonization. The lab also addresses problems in climate change communication, including the role of the media.
Toshifumi Noumi, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Noumi Lab mainly studies cosmology, quantum field theory, and string theory. The lab approaches the mysteries of cosmology, such as inflation, dark matter, and dark energy, from the perspectives of quantum field theory and quantum gravity. The lab also explores the properties of elementary particles and gravity, using observations such as the cosmic microwave background and gravitational waves as clues.
Oda Takashi, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Oda Lab studies the many faces of disasters and cities from a geographical perspective. The lab researches disaster prevention education and awareness-raising in schools and communities in collaboration with researchers in Japan and abroad, and is also involved in developing training programs and teaching materials. The lab also studies the places and people that pass on the memories and lessons of disasters, as well as approaches to disaster preparedness in North American cities.
Kazutoshi Kudo, Professor
0 student voices
The Kudo Lab studies where skillfulness and proficiency in movement come from. Top athletes, dancers, and musicians acquire extremely advanced skills through daily practice. Using such expert performance as a clue, the lab investigates the differences between skilled performers and novices, as well as the path of improvement. The lab aims to clarify the principles of learning and control of expert skills and to apply the findings to motor instruction and coaching.
