The Mathematical Bioinformatics Lab conducts research that elucidates complex life phenomena using mathematical tools such as nonlinear dynamics, stochastic processes, and information theory. Its subjects span multiple levels, from cells to the brain and on to human society. Each faculty member covers a broad range of topics in the life sciences, medicine, and human and social sciences where mathematics plays a role. The lab aims to apply the knowledge it gains to medicine and engineering.

Kunihiko Sadakane, Professor
Software & Computing0 student voices
The Sadakane-Ito Lab studies mathematical engineering broadly, with an emphasis on mathematical structure. The lab works on combinatorial optimization, algorithm theory, and applications of discrete mathematics to engineering. Prof. Sadakane researches algorithms and data structures for processing massive amounts of data. Associate Professor Ito researches machine learning and mathematical optimization methodologies for decision-making under uncertainty.

Tetsuya J Kobayashi, Professor
Bio & Life Sciences0 student voices
The lab studies how living systems receive, process, and use information. Using mathematical frameworks such as information theory, learning theory, and information thermodynamics, it explores properties unique to living systems. A distinguishing feature is its combination of various types of quantitative data with theoretical and computational methods. The lab also aims to apply the theories it develops to the design of new computational algorithms and engineering systems.
