Mikio Koshihara, Professor
Structures & Mechanics0 student voices
Koshihara Lab studies, from a structural perspective, the potential of using natural materials such as wood, stone, and earth in architecture, with a focus on timber buildings. Its work ranges widely, from developing new timber technologies using materials such as CLT to the seismic performance of wooden houses and wooden school buildings. The lab also works on traditional timber architecture such as five-story pagodas and Noh stages, and on the seismic retrofitting of buildings that are cultural properties.

Yoshiaki Nakano, Professor
Structures & Mechanics0 student voices
The Nakano Lab conducts research with the goal of improving the seismic performance of buildings made of materials such as reinforced concrete. Through experiments and simulations, the lab investigates how buildings behave and what kind of damage they suffer when hit by earthquakes and tsunamis. The results of its research have been adopted in laws, design standards, and guidelines for judging damage. In an international joint project in Bangladesh, the lab held seminars using a manual for seismic evaluation that reflects its research results.

Tomohiro Tachi, Professor
Structures & Mechanics0 student voices
The Tachi Lab studies the relationship between the shapes of three-dimensional forms and the way structures function, with the aim of making it possible to design them. Starting from finding the shapes around us fascinating, the lab interprets them using geometric and computational methods. Its main themes are origami, which deals with the shapes and motions created by folding paper, and structural tessellation, which fills surfaces and space with polygons or polyhedra. Possible applications include temporary buildings that shift between a flat-folded state and a rigid three-dimensional state, and devices that control heat, light, and sound.
