Taka Narumi, Lecturer
Materials & Nanotech0 student voices
The lab studies the mechanisms of solidification and crystal growth when liquids such as molten metals (melts) solidify. In casting, defects such as cracks can form while the metal is solidifying. The lab aims to clarify how these defects arise and to develop microstructure control methods that prevent them. Using synchrotron radiation, a type of intense X-ray, the lab directly observes metals as they solidify, following the process over time. The lab publishes videos related to solidification, including X-ray imaging, on YouTube.

Teruyasu Mizoguchi, Professor
Materials & Nanotech0 student voices
The Mizoguchi Lab clarifies the relationship between the atomic arrangement and electronic states of materials and their functions (structure–function relationships), and studies methods for designing materials. The lab combines artificial intelligence (AI), computer simulation, and atomic-level measurement in its research. The lab aims to realize "Designed Materials," in which materials with a target function are created deliberately. All students join from other universities or labs when they begin graduate school, and they take on presenting at academic conferences and writing papers.

Shunsuke Yagi, Professor
Energy & Batteries0 student voices
The Yagi Lab (Energy Storage Materials Engineering Lab) studies new rechargeable batteries and efficient electrochemical processes from the standpoint of materials science. Realizing a sustainable society requires technologies that store and convert energy efficiently. The lab covers the entire process, from synthesizing and evaluating materials and catalysts that store electricity to assembling devices. It also works on technologies that prevent corrosion of materials, as well as surface treatment.
