Yasumasa Fujii, Professor
Economics & Social Systems1 student voices
The Fujii-Komiyama Lab analyzes problems related to energy, environmental, and economic systems using mathematical methods. Using mathematical programming, probability and statistics methods, and econometric analysis, the lab evaluates related policies and technology development. Its research centers on surveying large volumes of data, such as international energy statistics, and writing large-scale computer programs. The lab examines increasingly complex conditions, including carbon neutrality, disasters, and geopolitical risk, from both engineering and social science perspectives.
Takuji Waseda, Professor
Environment & Sustainability1 student voices
The Waseda-Kodaira Lab studies ocean waves (wind waves) and ocean currents. Its main methods are numerical simulation, observations at sea, and experiments in wave tanks. The lab works on the properties of waves such as freak waves, the interaction between waves and sea ice, and the assessment of ocean energy. In recent years, the lab has also been studying the polar ocean environment, including sea ice.
Seiichi Koshizuka, Professor
Fluids & Heat1 student voices
The Koshizuka-Shibata Lab studies methods for reproducing a variety of complex phenomena on computers. Using the MPS method, the lab's own particle method, it can calculate even complex phenomena such as water splashes. The MPS method has been turned into commercial software by private companies and is used in a variety of industries. The lab also works on applications to disasters, ships, and medicine, and on creating CG images based on simulation.
Tomoya Kawasaki, Associate Professor
Economics & Social Systems1 student voices
The Kawasaki Lab studies logistics systems and supply chains. Using methods from traffic engineering, transportation economics, and statistics, the lab treats logistics as a single system. Looking ahead to a future shaped by technological innovation and changing regulations, its goal is to design logistics systems that are desirable for society and for logistics companies. The lab also puts strong effort into management science research related to the management of logistics and shipping companies.
Shuichiro Miwa, Associate Professor
Fluids & Heat1 student voices
Miwa Lab (Visualization Laboratory) combines experiments, numerical simulation, and AI to study the behavior of heat and flow (thermal-hydraulics) inside nuclear reactors and similar systems. The lab aims to reveal the mechanisms behind invisible flow phenomena by visualizing them, and to apply this understanding to challenges such as developing next-generation reactors and decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Its main research focus is multiphase flow, especially gas-liquid two-phase flow, in which gas and liquid flow together as a mixture. The lab carries out joint research with research institutions, companies, and electric power companies in Japan and abroad, and it is an international lab with researchers and students from overseas.
Tomohiko Ihara, Associate Professor
Environment & Sustainability1 student voices
The Ihara Lab studies how changes in urban climate caused by global warming and the urban heat island effect affect heatstroke, sleep disorders, energy consumption, and more. The lab analyzes a variety of data to assess these impacts and designs countermeasures based on life cycle thinking. The lab also conducts research on life cycle assessment (LCA) of energy technologies and consumer behavior. The lab accepts undergraduate students from Course C of the Department of Systems Innovation (the Intelligent Social Systems Course and the PSI Course), and graduate students from the Department of Environment Systems and from the Graduate Program in Sustainability Science (GPSS), both in the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences. The lab is based mainly at Kashiwa Campus, but undergraduate students can also choose a room at Hongo Campus.
Kiyoshi Izumi, Professor
AI & Machine Learning1 student voices
Izumi Lab analyzes human behavior data collected in the real world and builds models from it, then uses those models to simulate collective behavior and socioeconomic phenomena. Its main research focus is analyzing economic trends, including financial markets, and designing economic institutions and policies. The lab works on artificial markets, which are virtual markets built inside a computer, and on text mining, which analyzes markets using the text of economic news articles and Bank of Japan reports. The lab conducts its research in collaboration with financial institutions.
Kenichi Ishikawa, Professor
Quantum & Condensed Matter1 student voices
The Ishikawa Lab studies, through theory and simulation, the phenomena that laser light induces in atoms, molecules, and solids, as well as their applications. The lab deals with the motion of electrons on attosecond timescales, which are extremely short, and with the mechanisms by which intense lasers process materials. By developing new computational methods and simulation programs, the lab works on explaining experimental results and predicting new phenomena. The lab conducts joint research with universities and research institutions in Japan and abroad, including TU Wien and Tohoku University.
Masaatsu Aichi, Lecturer
Energy & Batteries1 student voices
The Energy and Environment Lab conducts research aimed at contributing to solutions for environmental problems, resource problems, and disaster prevention by making good use of the subsurface. Many subsurface problems are difficult to observe directly, so the lab combines theory, simulation, laboratory experiments, and field surveys. Its themes include land subsidence caused by groundwater pumping and ground-source heat utilization, which uses heat from the ground for heating and cooling. The lab also conducts demonstration tests of a technology that uses fiber-optic sensors to measure tiny deformations in rock mass.
Katsunori Fukui, Professor
Structures & Mechanics1 student voices
The Fukui-Hashiba Lab studies the development of the geosphere, including the ground surface and underground spaces. Many activities essential to human life, such as environmental conservation, waste disposal, and the development of resources and energy, are connected to geosphere development. Through in-situ tests, laboratory tests, and numerical analysis, the lab investigates the mechanical properties of crustal materials such as rock mass, as well as the interaction between development machinery and the ground. The lab also works on the development of seafloor hydrothermal deposits and the prediction of rock mass failure.
