Makoto Notomi, Professor
0 student voices
Under the banner of "Environmental Systems Assessment," the Notomi Lab studies methods for measuring the value of things related to the environment and energy. The lab aims to show quantitatively, from the three perspectives of environment, economy, and society, the functions of natural capital such as forests, farmland, and rivers. Building on mechanical engineering and thermal engineering, the lab draws on knowledge from a wide range of fields, including sociology, economics, agriculture, and forestry. The lab accepts students who want to tackle environmental and energy problems, whether they come from science and engineering or from the humanities and social sciences.
Yushi Kamiya, Professor
0 student voices
The Kamiya Lab (Electric Vehicle Lab) studies electric vehicles, such as battery electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles, and the equipment installed in them. It treats everything as a single flow, from designing batteries, motors, and chargers to building prototype vehicles and evaluating their performance. With electrical engineering as its core, the lab combines mechanical engineering and chemistry in its research. The lab conducts demonstration tests in which vehicles it has developed run on public roads, collecting data from real-world use.
Hiroshi Onoda, Professor
0 student voices
The Onoda Lab does technology development and research on new social systems for building a recycling-oriented society and a low-carbon society. Its research pillars include life cycle assessment of products and systems, the 3Rs, resource circulation, energy creation and energy saving, and next-generation mobility. Centered on engineering, it is an interdisciplinary lab spanning the sciences and humanities, joined by people who have studied social sciences and by working professionals. Keeping "social implementation" in mind, the lab carries out its research in connection with technology development and demonstration projects in which industry, academia, government, and citizens collaborate.
Takashi Nozu, Professor
0 student voices
The Nozu Lab studies, from a public policy perspective, how to realize sustainable regional societies. Its focus is boundary areas where multiple fields intersect, such as the environment, regional revitalization, agriculture, food, energy, and innovation. In collaboration with companies and government agencies, the lab sets research themes that are needed in the real world and aims to give its results back to society. Most members come from humanities and social science faculties, but some come from science and engineering faculties, and working professionals are also enrolled as students.
Kenshi Baba, Professor
0 student voices
The Baba Lab studies environmental, energy, and climate change policy in cities and regions. Drawing on environmental policy studies, policy process theory, consensus building, and behavioral science, the lab investigates how policies are decided and how people act. Its specific subjects include discussions over facility siting, surveys in which citizens participate, and how environmentally friendly behavior spreads. In the graduate school, the lab is in charge of Environmental and Energy Governance Research and accepts students in the master's and doctoral programs.
Takanari Ouchi, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Ouchi Lab develops processes for producing metals with high efficiency, as well as recycling processes that recover metals after use. The lab aims to support advanced technology by efficiently converting energy into the form of metals. Building on physical chemistry, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, reaction engineering, and materials science, the lab works with precious metals, rare metals, and reactive metals. The lab was established in April 2026 and is recruiting graduate students and postdocs.
Takashi Otsuki, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Otsuki Lab (Environmental and Energy Systems Engineering Lab) studies the planning and assessment of energy and power systems for a sustainable society. The lab builds models using mathematical programming and geographic information, and calculates future energy mixes and the costs of decarbonization technologies. It is an interdisciplinary field bridging the sciences and the humanities, closely tied not only to engineering and science but also to economics and the social sciences. The lab also conducts joint research with energy companies and external research institutes, and accepts students in the master's and doctoral programs.
