Takahiko Takahiko, Professor
0 student voices
The Takahiko Lab researches devices that generate ultrasound and their applications in medical engineering. Ultrasound is sound with a frequency too high for humans to hear, and it is strongly excited at the natural frequency of a piezoelectric material. Using piezoelectric thin films, the lab develops sensors that detect disease markers, elements that measure the viscosity of droplets, and high-resolution ultrasonic probes. The lab aims to carry out research and make things that are truly useful.

The Watanabe Lab studies control: making real-world systems such as aircraft, automobiles, ships, and manufacturing equipment move as intended, using computers and electronic devices. Control is one of the foundational technologies supporting modern society and daily life. It is highly versatile and is applied in a wide range of fields. The lab works on mathematical modeling that enables "good control," on developing model-based control methods, and on applying them to real-world systems. Control engineering is often thought of as a mathematical field that deals only with mechanical and electrical systems, but the professor writes that this is not the whole picture.

Building on pharmacology, the lab studies how substances inside the body act on nerves, inflammation, and metabolism. The lab conducts parallel studies on the regulation of neuroinflammation by the body's own endocannabinoid system and the regulation of metabolism by components of edible crickets. Its research spans multiple fields, including neuroscience, immunology, nutrition science, and food chemistry. It also aims to compensate, with scientific backing, for things that are not easily accepted by society.

From the standpoint of cell biology, the lab studies the environment formed by cancer cells and the cells surrounding them (the tumor microenvironment). It focuses on how cells communicate with one another through extracellular vesicles such as exosomes. Immune cells that work near tumors (tumor-associated macrophages) and models that mimic body tissues are also key research topics.
