Yudai Takarada, Professor
0 student voices
The Takarada Lab studies how the brain and nerves work when a person produces force. The lab investigates how far the brain's activity can change the maximum muscle force a person can exert voluntarily. It uses muscle contractions with blood flow restricted in the arms or legs, shouts, and words presented without the person's awareness as clues. Using methods such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, the lab measures the state of the brain while force is produced.
Motoko Taguchi, Professor
0 student voices
Through research in sports nutrition, the Taguchi Lab clarifies how athletes should eat. The lab studies human participants, examining energy metabolism and energy balance, body composition, and nutrient intake. It builds up evidence using both cross-sectional comparisons and long-term follow-up. The lab aims to turn its findings into forms that can be used in competitive settings.
Jun Tsuchiya, Professor
0 student voices
The Tsuchiya Lab studies how movements in sport work, from the standpoint of sport movement science. Focusing on gymnastics skills, the lab measures the movements of different parts of the body and investigates how rotation and takeoff are generated. The lab applies what it learns to ways of coaching athletes to acquire skills.
Suguru Torii, Professor
0 student voices
The Torii Lab is a lab for musculoskeletal sports medicine. The musculoskeletal system refers to the organs involved in movement, including muscles, tendons, bones, cartilage, ligaments, and nerves. In the lab's exercises, students learn the basic structure of each part of the musculoskeletal system, knowledge of typical sports injuries (acute trauma and overuse injuries), and how to assess them. The lab also measures bone density in growing children and athletes, and conducts medical checks for teams.
Yoshio Nakamura, Professor
0 student voices
The Nakamura Lab studies exercise and sport for promoting health. The lab also covers how to exercise to keep the body mobile into old age, and how to coach it. Management and marketing for delivering exercise and sport services to the people who need them are also subjects of the lab's research.
Masaki Nishida, Professor
0 student voices
The Nishida Lab studies how exercise, the brain, and the mind work, from the perspective of sleep and biological rhythms. It examines how the way athletes sleep relates to their performance in competition and their physical condition. Athletes' mental health and well-being are also one of the lab's research themes. The effects of sleep environments, such as naps and bedding, are tested by simultaneously measuring EEG, core body temperature, and heart rate variability.
Naoyuki Hayashi, Professor
0 student voices
The Hayashi Lab studies how the body responds to exercise, eating, and sensory stimulation, from the perspective of blood flow and the autonomic nerves. It measures flow in hard-to-capture sites, such as blood flow at the back of the eye, in the brain, and in the face. It investigates how the blood flow that supports vision is maintained during exercise and mental tasks. It also covers changes in facial blood flow in response to taste and emotion, and the effect of thorough chewing on metabolism after a meal.
Seiji Maeda, Professor
0 student voices
The Maeda Lab studies the changes that exercise causes inside the body, from the standpoint of physiology. In particular, it examines how exercise changes arterial stiffness and the function of the inner lining of blood vessels. The relationship between exercise and the function of the kidneys and heart is also a research theme. The lab aims to connect its findings to ways of exercising that prevent disease and maintain health.
Hiroaki Masaki, Professor
0 student voices
Masaki Lab is a lab for sport psychology, psychophysiology, and cognitive neuroscience. The lab studies athletes' refined movements and their mental functions. Its strength is that, beyond behavioral measures and questionnaire surveys, it can measure brain activity with EEG and functional MRI. The lab also studies ways to prevent choking under pressure (agari) and the effects of exercise on brain function.
Masashi Miyashita, Professor
0 student voices
Miyashita Lab studies how exercise and diet affect energy metabolism. The lab measures how blood lipids and glucose change after a meal and examines differences due to exercise and eating patterns. The lab also covers appetite-regulating hormones and the effects of chewing on how energy is used. Another research theme is the relationship between daily physical activity and fitness and health, from children to adults.
