The Biohistory Lab (Oda Lab) studies the mechanisms of cells and morphogenesis, centered on the spider Parasteatoda tepidariorum, at the JT Biohistory Research Hall. Parasteatoda tepidariorum is a model organism that the lab pioneered. By comparing with insects and vertebrates, the lab explores the fundamental principles underlying animal diversity. The JT Biohistory Research Hall accepts graduate students as a collaborative chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, Graduate School of Science, Osaka University.

The Kuroda Lab studies how cells assemble “building materials” such as collagen to form the body. The lab mainly uses zebrafish, a model organism, for its investigations. It aims to uncover the basic principle by which cells build the shape of the body by precisely orienting structures of collagen fibers. The JT Biohistory Research Hall, where the lab is located, is in charge of the cooperative chair “Biohistory” in the Department of Biological Sciences, Graduate School of Science, Osaka University, and accepts graduate students.

The Biomolecular Machine Design Lab studies how biological molecular motors such as kinesin and dynein move reliably in one direction in a nanoscale world dominated by thermal fluctuations. Beyond examining existing molecular motors, the lab is trying to establish a “create to understand” approach: prototyping new molecular motors from simple components and understanding them through their behavior. It also focuses on the connection between parts and the whole as the hierarchy rises from molecules to organelles, cells, and individuals, and investigates collective properties in model systems using DNA nanostructures and other materials. The laboratory space is located in the Advanced ICT Research Institute (Kobe/Akashi) of the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), and the lab operates as a team within NICT's Biophysics Project.

The lab studies how blood vessels are formed and maintained during development and afterward. Using zebrafish embryos, it examines how the shape and movement of endothelial cells are regulated, with methods such as high-resolution time-lapse imaging. It also focuses on how forces generated by blood flow affect endothelial cell behavior and blood vessel shape. The research is conducted at the RIKEN Kobe Campus, and the lab is introduced at Osaka University as a lab of the Department of Biological Sciences.

The Life Inheritance Systems Lab studies the molecular basis of biological phenomena unique to germ cells. Even when an individual organism reaches the end of its life, a species can persist almost indefinitely, because germ cells refresh genetic information and pass it on accurately to the next generation. The lab focuses on meiosis, which halves the number of chromosomes, and on differentiation into sperm and eggs (gametes), and studies them using mice and nematodes. The lab's website presents it as the “Gametogenesis Research Team” of the RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research.
