The lab studies multiphysics phenomena that arise in thermal processes such as welding, joining and metal additive manufacturing (AM). It conducts research and education on numerical simulation technologies based on mathematical modeling, AI and computational mechanics. It also works on applied research in shipbuilding and large structures, such as thermal distortion prediction using AI, machine learning and digital twins. Building on methods such as the idealized explicit FEM, the lab aims to predict the deformation, residual stress and structural integrity of joined structures with high accuracy, and to realize highly efficient and highly reliable smart manufacturing technologies. The lab belongs to the Joining Evaluation Division of the Joining and Welding Research Institute, Osaka University.

The lab studies how to evaluate the performance and reliability of various kinds of structures. It views the life cycle, from design and construction through testing and service to repair, reinforcement, and maintenance, along a time axis called the “through-process.” It views the range from material microstructure through welded and joined members to whole structures, from micro to macro, along a spatial axis called “trans-scale.” The lab aims to build a design science that contributes to advancing structuring processes that use welding and joining. The lab is a research field in the Joining Evaluation Division of the Joining and Welding Research Institute.

The Joining Microstructure Evaluation Lab studies the properties of welded and joined regions from the standpoint of materials science. It aims to understand the solidification and transformation behavior of materials and to clarify how microstructures form in welds and joints. To evaluate and predict the reliability of joints, such as corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, as well as their service life, the lab carries out research using experiments and simulation. The lab is a research field of the Joining and Welding Research Institute, Osaka University, and is also introduced in the Graduate School of Engineering under the name “Joining Microstructure Design Chair.”
