The Welding Mechanism Lab studies the mechanisms that determine the functions and mechanical properties of joined structures made by fusion welding, liquid-phase joining, and solid-state bonding. From a materials science perspective, it observes and analyzes the microstructure and structure of joints and interfaces, and builds models based on the results for simulation. It aims to lay the foundations of materials design for obtaining defect-free joining interfaces with excellent functions, leading to the development of new joining methods and the property evaluation of joined structures. The lab belongs to the Joining Mechanism Division of the Joining and Welding Research Institute, Osaka University, and is also introduced in the Graduate School of Engineering's laboratory directory under the name "Welding and Joining Functional Design Chair."

The lab studies phenomena at the interfaces formed when ferrous, non-ferrous and non-metallic materials, or combinations of them, are joined or welded. It aims to clarify how interfaces form and to use that knowledge to create new interface control technologies. Its research centers on friction joining methods such as friction stir welding (FSW), friction welding and linear friction welding, as well as fusion welding methods. The lab belongs to the Joining Mechanism Division of the Joining and Welding Research Institute, Osaka University, and is also introduced as "Fujii Lab" on the lab's website. According to the lab's website, joining the lab requires passing the graduate school entrance exam for the Division of Materials and Manufacturing Science, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University. Professor Hidetoshi Fujii also serves as director of the Nippon Steel Future Manufacturing Collaborative Research Institute and the Honda-Osaka University Joining Science and Manufacturing Collaborative Research Institute at the Joining and Welding Research Institute, and both institutes state that students take part in their research themes.

The lab (Kondo Lab) studies how to strengthen metallic materials such as titanium through powder sintering, metal 3D printing, and compositing with carbon nanotubes. It examines the inside of materials broadly, from atomic-scale calculations to analysis of joint interfaces between dissimilar materials and evaluation of corrosion and friction and wear. The lab is a division of the Joining and Welding Research Institute, Osaka University, and participates in the graduate school as a cooperating division of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering. The lab's page introduces equipment for making and examining materials, such as heat treatment equipment and electron microscopes.
