The Ultra-Intense Field Science group studies high-energy-density plasmas and laser fusion using ultra-intense electric, magnetic, and radiation fields created by lasers. In fast ignition laser fusion, which is pursued at the institute, fusion fuel compressed to high density is heated in an instant by a high-intensity laser, with the aim of raising it to the temperature needed for ignition. The lab also works on astrophysics and nuclear science using intense fields, such as studying photoionized plasmas around black holes in the laboratory. The group is a cooperating group of the Department of Physics, Graduate School of Science, The University of Osaka, and is located at the Institute of Laser Engineering.

The Laser Astrophysics group (LAP) is a lab that uses high-power lasers to test, in the laboratory, the fundamental processes of phenomena that occur in space. Its targets are collisionless shocks, cosmic-ray particle acceleration, and magnetic field generation, which are seen in supernova remnants, active galactic nuclei, and solar flares. The lab pursues these through both experiments with power lasers such as Gekko XII and LFEX, and theory and simulation. Students belong to the Department of Earth and Space Science, Graduate School of Science.

The Ultra-High Pressure Science group studies how to create ultrahigh-pressure states using shock waves that high-intensity lasers generate inside matter. The pressures obtained with lasers far exceed those at the center of the Earth (about 3.5 million atmospheres), reaching conditions inside Jupiter and at the center of the Sun. The lab is pioneering methods that control shock waves in time and space to create states above 1 billion atmospheres, and applies the resulting states to research on the interiors of the Earth and planets. It is also working on applications to materials processing technologies such as laser peening, and on developing fusion ignition schemes driven by shock waves.

The Extreme Plasma Engineering Division (Kuramitsu Lab) studies plasma science using high-power lasers. The lab recreates, on a small laboratory scale, the ultra-high-temperature, high-pressure world like the center of the Sun and the high-energy-density world found in distant space, in order to probe the mysteries of the universe. Students take part in research projects as members of the research team, and also join experiments at large laser facilities on and off campus. The lab is one of the research groups of the Institute of Laser Engineering, and its graduate students belong to the Division of Electrical, Electronic and Infocommunications Engineering in the Graduate School of Engineering.
