The Nonequilibrium Radiative Plasma Theory (THR) Lab studies "high-energy-density states", in which matter is heated to extremely high temperatures in an instant by intense laser light, using theory and computer simulation. A high-energy-density state is a dense, high-temperature state of matter, like the interiors of stars and planets. At extremely high temperatures, matter turns into plasma, fast electrons and ions are generated, and nuclear fusion reactions and X-ray and gamma-ray radiation occur. By understanding the physics taking place inside, the lab hopes to contribute to estimating the interiors of stars and to realizing laser fusion and high-energy particle accelerators.

The Open-System Plasma Theory (TOP) Lab studies the physics of "high-energy-density plasmas", states of matter with high density and temperature, using theory and simulation. Plasma is a many-body system in which charged particles move collectively; it generates electromagnetic fields and produces phenomena not seen in neutral matter. The lab builds numerical simulations and theoretical models for plasmas that can be created with large, high-intensity laser facilities. The lab is located within the Institute of Laser Engineering at Osaka University, and is a cooperating research group of the Department of Physics, Graduate School of Science.

The Physics Informatics Lab studies the implosion in laser fusion and the related fundamental laser-plasma physics through computer simulation. In the newly proposed fast ignition scheme, compression lasers implode the target, and the resulting dense plasma is further heated by an ultra-intense laser to aim for ignition. Because these are strongly nonlinear phenomena, simulation is important in addition to theoretical analysis, and the lab also develops computational codes best suited to the analysis. In the institute's list of research groups, the lab is introduced as a group that uses computational science and AI to understand plasmas from fundamentals to applications.
