The Laser Materials Engineering (LMO) Group researches new materials and optical elements to improve the efficiency and functionality of high-power lasers. Its research targets include transparent ceramics and the optical functional materials made from them, nonlinear optical crystals for broadband wavelength conversion, specialty optical fibers, and broadband mirrors and diffraction gratings. The lab also works on clarifying how lasers damage optical elements and on making elements more resistant to that damage (improving laser damage resistance).

The Nakajima Lab (Terahertz Science Group) researches terahertz spectroscopy, terahertz engineering, ultrafast spectroscopy, and metamaterials. Across the terahertz, infrared, and optical regions, the lab covers everything from fundamental physical phenomena to industrial applied research. Osaka University has a long history in terahertz and infrared spectroscopy, and was a center of terahertz and infrared spectroscopy research in Japan. The lab also actively pursues joint research with companies.

The Ultra-Broadband Photonics Lab centers on developing deep ultraviolet laser sources, and also works on new nonlinear optical devices and thin-film technology. The lab works with nonlinear optical crystals and devices that change the wavelength of light, and investigates a variety of nonlinear optical phenomena through both experiments and numerical simulation. Professor Yoshimura and Assistant Professor Nambu supervise undergraduate and graduate students as a cooperating chair of the Graduate School of Engineering. On the lab's website, it is presented under the name "Yoshimura Lab."

The Materials and Applied Technology group of the Composite Photonics research area (Chikumoto Lab) conducts research on developing next-generation laser materials and their applications. In addition to developing long-lifetime laser materials, the group works on measurements that visualize magnetic field distributions with light and on studies of cultural heritage using laser spectroscopy. Its superconductivity research deals with cable joining technology needed for DC power transmission using high-temperature superconductors. Research on applications of visible semiconductor lasers in the same lab is led by Project Professor Kazuhisa Yamamoto and others.

The Power Photonics (PLP) Lab takes on unprecedented research in the field of photonics, centered on lasers, and aims for new developments. Research centers on experiments and analysis (programming), and AI will also be used in research, experiments, and analysis. The lab works on precise control of high-intensity lasers, laser development, beam shaping in 2D and 3D space, nanotechnology, and more. The lab is run jointly with the MAT group (Professor Tomoko Chikumoto), which works on laser applications and superconductivity.

The Power Laser Systems Engineering Group focuses on research and development of power lasers with the world's highest average output power. It also studies new laser materials, new methods of laser oscillation and amplification, and beam control technologies. The lab calls multipurpose systems that can be designed on demand through modularization “smart power lasers,” and aims at a wide range of applications including laser processing, fluorescence analysis, and laser fusion. Students are assigned to the lab as the cooperating research group “Laser Science Research Area” of the Quantum Information Electronics Section in the Division of Electrical, Electronic and Infocommunications Engineering, School and Graduate School of Engineering. Undergraduates who wish to join the lab must belong to the Quantum Information Electronics Course in the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering, School of Engineering.

The Nuclear Photonics Lab studies a new research field that combines nuclear physics and laser science. The lab conducts experiments using the high-power lasers GEKKO XII and LFEX at the Institute of Laser Engineering, as well as experiments and device development using relatively compact high-power laser systems that a single lab can operate. Its work ranges widely, from research aimed at realizing laser fusion energy to developing nondestructive testing technology using neutrons and research on boron neutron capture therapy for cancer. The lab has networks with research facilities in Japan and abroad, not only within the institute, so students can gain experience at a variety of research facilities.

The Plasma Photonics Lab aims to unravel high-energy-density states of matter by harnessing a variety of quantum beams. The lab accepts inquiries from researchers who want to try experiments on ultrahigh pressure and ultrahigh temperature, dynamic ultrahigh-pressure compression, and ultrahigh-speed impact, as well as ultrafast in situ observation of extreme environments. On the lab's website it is introduced under the name “Ozaki Lab,” and visit requests are accepted at any time.
