Keisuke Shigemori, Professor
0 student voices
The Laser Fusion Systems (LFS) group, at the Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University, aims to design a laser fusion power reactor based on an understanding of materials. On the lab's website, the group is introduced as the "Shigemori Lab," which conducts research and development on igniting and burning fusion fuel with lasers, and research and development on laser processing using power lasers. According to the website, the Shigemori Lab is a cooperating research group of the Division of Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering in the Graduate School of Engineering. In addition to experiments using Osaka University's large laser facility Gekko XII, the lab also conducts experiments at facilities such as Kyoto University and Tohoku University.

Akifumi Iwamoto, Professor

Fusion Energy Dynamics (FED) belongs to the Laser Fusion Science Division of the Institute of Laser Engineering, and studies how energy moves inside a laser fusion reactor. Part of the energy generated by fusion reactions circulates through the reactor as energy and as fuel, changing form along the way. The challenge is to build a laser fusion reactor system that satisfies both of these at the same time. The lab works on blankets, fuel production, digital twins, and reactor design.

Nobuhiko Sarukura, Professor

The Sarukura-Shimizu Lab works on developing next-generation light sources in pursuit of the limitless possibilities of optical technology. In addition to research on all-solid-state tunable ultraviolet lasers and high-intensity terahertz wave sources, the lab also conducts research with nanotechnology and biotechnology in mind. The lab focuses not only on basic research but also on applied research. At the Institute of Laser Engineering, the lab is introduced under the name "Extreme Materials Science (LAM)", and it belongs to the Laser Applied Engineering area of the Quantum Energy Engineering Division in the Department of Environmental and Energy Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering.
