The Plant Physiology and Morphology Lab studies the structure and function of plant tissues and cells and how they respond to the environment. The lab works with a wide range of resource plants, including food crops such as rice, wheat, and maize, as well as forage grasses and wild plants. Morphology and physiology/biochemistry are the two pillars of its research methods, and the lab has its own scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The lab is also broadly engaged in activities aimed at improving crop productivity and tolerance to environmental stress.

The Plant Genetics and Breeding Lab conducts research to improve crop productivity and environmental stress tolerance. It focuses in particular on the various “forms” of plants. For environmental stress tolerance, the lab looks at the internal “form” of plants and investigates how they respond and adapt to excess soil moisture and submergence stress. For productivity, it studies the “form” of the rice panicle.

The Crop Science Lab uses stable isotopes to study how crops acquire nutrients and water. For example, sweet potato can use atmospheric nitrogen even though it does not form root nodules. The lab aims to clarify the mechanism behind this phenomenon and to put it to practical use. Its goal is to establish self-sustaining, sustainable cropping systems that do not depend on fertilizer or water resources. Its main research methods are stable isotope analysis, analysis of root system and rhizosphere processes, and evaluation of plant-soil interactions.

The Horticultural Science Lab studies the gene functions that determine the color, shape, taste, and quality of flowers, vegetables, and fruits. Its approach is that once gene functions are clarified and made to work as intended, color, shape, and size can be designed, and taste and quality can be controlled. The lab also works on molecular breeding, such as genome editing and genetic modification, and on component analysis by mass spectrometry.

The Plant Pathology Lab conducts research to deeply understand the interactions among plants, pathogenic microorganisms, and environmental microorganisms. It investigates the innate disease resistance that plants possess, the virulence strategies of pathogens, and the interactions among microorganisms. The lab aims to apply these findings to developing disease-resistant plants and making effective use of microorganisms. Research topics include plant disease resistance mechanisms, biological control using mycoviruses, and symbiosis between plants and endophytes.

The Plant Immunology Lab studies plant immunity, the mechanisms by which plants protect themselves from pathogens, at the molecular level. Plants are exposed to pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi, and protect themselves by activating biological defense mechanisms. To protect plants from disease, the lab has created disease-resistant plants. In its basic research, the lab uses model plants to investigate causal genes and then applies the results back to crops.

The Farmland Information Utilization Lab conducts research that collects and analyzes the wide range of information needed for plant production, including crop morphology and physiological traits, yield and quality, soil properties, and weather. By extracting useful information from the relationships among these factors, the lab aims to contribute to better crop production through improvements in plant breeding, cultivation management, and soil management. Its activities take place at Togo Field, a large farm of Nagoya University.

The Food Economics Lab studies contemporary issues in food, agriculture, and rural communities using economic and sociological approaches. Its main research subjects are all processes from food production to consumption, along with the institutions and policies related to them, including community activities in rural areas and their culture and history. The lab's main research methods are qualitative research and rural surveys, and students also go out for fieldwork. The lab places importance on the process in which each student sets a research question based on their own sense of the problem.

The Agricultural Informatics Lab combines plant production science with information and measurement science to carry out research that contributes to improving crop production. The lab pursues this research through the development of phenomics technologies. The lab is part of the Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences at Nagoya University and was established in November 2025.

The Plant Gene Function Lab studies the mechanisms of plant growth at the gene level. Using rice, a model monocot, and Arabidopsis thaliana, a model dicot, the lab focuses in particular on the molecular mechanisms of "stem elongation." The lab combines knowledge and techniques from many fields, including genetics, developmental biology, molecular biology, physiology, and biochemistry. The lab also works on the WISH Project, which uses the results of basic research to breed improved rice varieties and make them widely available.
