The Tropical Bioresources Lab conducts research aimed at sustainable food production, focusing on sago palm, which grows wild in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, and on crops such as rice. Sago palm is a palm that adapts to nutrient-poor land, acidic soils, and areas around brackish water, where growing crops is difficult. In its countries of origin, it is used as a staple food and as a food ingredient. The lab works on developing techniques for stable cultivation and management of sago palm. In rice, it investigates the structure and function of root systems that can adapt to stress in the soil environment.

The Biological Genetic Information Lab aims to understand the relationship between genetic information and useful traits, and to use that knowledge to breed tolerant crop varieties. Under drought, plants try to maintain shoot growth by expanding their root zone, but this ability differs greatly among varieties. To clarify the genetic mechanisms of root system formation that cause this difference, the lab conducts research using rice.

The Practical African Development Lab conducts research to contribute to higher and more stable crop production in sub-Saharan Africa, the region south of the Sahara Desert. In addition to studying how crop genetic resources respond to the environment and developing cultivation techniques, the lab works toward putting its research results into practical use in society. For its rice cultivation research, the lab uses a base built for joint research at the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization and conducts field trials on site. It also works with researchers inside and outside the university to develop techniques to control the parasitic weed Striga.

The Practical Asian Development Lab conducts research to solve local problems, working in rural villages in Cambodia and hilly areas of Nepal. Since 2008, CREA has run international cooperation projects in rural areas jointly with the Royal University of Agriculture in Cambodia, and has used these sites as places for research and education for the university's faculty and students. Within this work, the lab focuses on traditional foods that are being lost, and places particular emphasis on action research, in which solutions are put into practice and tested in real communities. In Nepal, the lab studies the effects of introducing biogas digesters that use livestock manure, with the aim of conserving forests.
