The Hongo Lab studies agricultural remote sensing, using satellite images to examine the condition of farmland and crops. Just as a doctor diagnoses a person's health from medical checkup images, the lab uses satellite images to examine crop yield, nutritional status, soil type, and the occurrence of pests and diseases. The lab matches yield and quality data measured in the field with satellite images to build estimation equations, making it possible to estimate yield and quality without visiting the site. The lab also places importance on educating people involved in food production. With research and education as twin pillars, it works with partners in Japan and abroad.
