Hitoshi Irie, Professor
0 student voices
The Irie Lab studies variations in Earth's atmospheric environment using world-leading remote sensing technology. Its goal is to produce reliable scientific knowledge, including predictions, that is essential for mitigating and adapting to the climate crisis. The lab leads international ground-based remote sensing observation networks and conducts joint research with research institutions in Japan and abroad. It focuses on phenomena that are hard to predict, such as air pollution from human activities, extreme weather such as linear precipitation bands, forest fires, lightning activity, and volcanic activity.

Naoko Saitoh, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Saitoh Lab analyzes satellite data to study global-scale atmospheric problems such as global warming and ozone depletion. The lab is responsible for developing methods to retrieve the concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane at different altitudes from observations by satellites such as GOSAT, a greenhouse gas monitoring satellite. Using satellite and other data, the lab analyzes how long-lived gases move through the atmosphere. By combining atmospheric observations with atmospheric transport models, the lab also studies the carbon cycle.
