The lab predicts rain from several minutes to several hours ahead using weather radar and satellite data.

The lab of Associate Professor Otsuka studies "precipitation nowcasting," which predicts rain in the very near future from weather radar and satellite observations. Nowcasting is a technique that analyzes observation data on the spot to predict conditions from several minutes to several hours ahead. The lab works on both numerical simulation using supercomputers and short-term prediction using deep learning. As extreme weather becomes more frequent, the lab aims to put its results into real-time operation as quickly as possible so that they can be useful in people's daily lives.
