The Synthetic Organic Chemistry Lab studies new ways to assemble molecules in order to make compounds that benefit people, such as pharmaceuticals. Many problems remain in organic chemistry today, such as developing practical catalysts and efficient reactions. The lab designs asymmetric catalysts that harmonize diverse "forces", including ionic bonds produced by metals, hydrogen bonds, and halogen bonds. Making use of iodine produced in Chiba Prefecture, the lab is also researching how to make high-value compounds.

The Organic Molecular Chemistry Lab aims to develop unexpected new reactions and new transformation methods based on the design and creation of new transition metal catalysts. Once a new methodology is established, useful organic compounds can be made in fewer steps. Compounds that have been difficult to synthesize until now also come within reach. The lab wants to draw out the diverse capabilities of various transition metal elements and make new discoveries from them.
